Nikon AF-S Nikkor 20mm f/1.8G ED N lens - Official Thread

Waiting for review.

I hope there will be significant improvement compared with the older version, Nikon 20mm f/2.8 AF-D.

Else, I will stick to this old lens. This old lens is really a Gem !

The 20/2.8 is a gem and will forever be a classic.

Was at Funan earlier, 20/1.8 not stock yet :(

I am sticking to the AFD 20mm f/2.8 as well, though mostly due to duplication (AFD 20-35mm f/2.8, AFS 16-35mm f/4G), but also the underwater lens port as well (have to buy new lens port for the new lens).

Apart from light gathering ability, what is the real life difference between the 20/2.8 and 20/1.8? I have the older 20/2.8 too.

Slightly shallower dof? Better af in low light?

so far I am impressed with the new f1.8 G lenses
looking forward to try this 20mm out

Just want to add something.... for those not familiar with AF performance.

AF module control is a functionality found in a camera's body not a lens. Lens are not responsible for doing the triangulation computation but gets instructions from the camera body where to focus and adjust f-stop.

How good the AF depends on the technology built into camera model's body thus far as AF tech goes. ( Nikon's Multi-CAM 3500 AF system) How much light gets into a lens construction is what will allow the AF module to work efficiently to hunt for focus. In the case of this new 20mm it has I think 1.5 stop more then the older version at f/2.8? That's due to better construction, glass and coating on the lens elements over the older 20mm model. to say it's AF is better is a NON QUESTION.

Btw I have own it before and it is no slob. But larger f-stop does not mean better low light AF performance. Here is partial paragraph I extracted from a website which explain this maybe better then me .

"The speed of the AF system is highly dependent on the maximum aperture offered by the lens. F-stops of around f/2 to f/2.8 are generally considered optimal in terms of focusing speed and accuracy. Faster lenses than this (e.g.: f/1.4 or f/1.8) typically have very low depth of field, meaning it takes longer to achieve correct focus, despite the increased amount of light.

Most consumer camera systems will only autofocus reliably with lenses that have a maximum aperture of at least f/5.6, while professional models can often cope with lenses that have a maximum aperture of f/8, which is particularly useful for lenses used in conjunction with teleconverters."

The D4 was the first to have a AF module that works fine up to f/8 but Nikon cameras before that model, their AF works fine up to F5.6. The new Nikon D750 also works at f8 along with D800 and D810. what happen if you bought a lens that only has a maximum of f/8 and you are using a Nikon D700? AF would not work. Same goes fro Canon too.

So new 20mm better AF in low light? Doubt it. Focusing speed should be faster then the old servo moving the elements about in the 20mm but again that depends on how fast the AF module in the body computate the target's location.

I don't know about you, but I do find from my experience that a bigger aperture lens does focus faster and more accurately in the low light situations that I encountered... I suppose the statement about optimum aperture being at f2.8 is for normal light conditions?

Size on the D750....

Photokina Review..... MADE IN CHINA :( and really light and cheap price ( i.e. It's no Pro Lens )

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wa18norsG1c 20CM close focus is cool though.... ;)

Its not a main lens for me (great to have additional, especially when i travel) so I'm glad its a Made in China 'not pro' lens.. Coz then its cheap and light.

I owned the 35/1.8g, 85/1.8g - both made in china, light, cheap with excellent optics.
