lsisaxon,

c?he had the hood on.
that's why i think with /without hood, the difference, is insignificant.

ok lah... just trying to think of all the possibilities.

So focus, WB, handshake, over-exposure ...

no need to say this wad... basically anyone who posted here kenna lumped into one basket with the exception of yourself... haiz... bye bye...

actually I refrained myself from pointing out individually. Some of the comments are really really gibberish.

unfortunately, that's www these days... hearsay and assumption without corresponding experience backing made up majority of the content.

bye bye to you. see you back here again next time. :)

I think it will be worse if he hadn't used the hood. ;p

Then I can only conclude that the lighting must be quite bad/flat..

WB is also a bit too cold. May be because there is too much red in the image. I warmed up the first image (may be a bit over corrected) and it looks better.

Edit:
Added Red, Subtracted Blue (WB) and Subtracted density (Overexposure) for this one. Looks less flary now.. WB makes such a big difference? :dunno: I usually shoot at Cloudy WB.

actually, i was really wondering if a hood will make that much of a difference, considering the 85mm hood is miserably small.

um... I find the metal hood BIG  Almost half the size of the lens but solid nonetheless.

How I wish all hood are metal these days  hearing the metal grinding sound when screwing in the hood makes me ;p

I prefer HB. I find it a chore screwing the HN on.

Yes, those HN hoods are good indeed.

As for the group pic, looks like the AF was on the red ribbon of the 2nd lady from left instead.

TS, if you had shot in raw, there's still room for corrections.

lsisaxon,
please lah!WB is another BIG issue in this series.

So it might not be a lens problem at all, no? Everything looks wrong because the WB is wrong? I'm not someone who play a lot with WB because I usually shoot on Cloudy and I don't have any problems.

To be honest, other than having 'flare' shouting at me when I saw the images, and an overexposure on the 2nd image, I don't see much of a problem with the lens. Might have been the WB playing tricks with me all along...

Yup.. same as DC135/2 also. Do you turn it to lock after you pull it out? I usually don't. ;p

the way i see it, like you mentioned, is PLBV.
but instead of just pointing fingers at PBV,
i'm quite surprised at the auto WB of d300?or was it d700 he used?
my D3 doesnt have such horrible AWB.

(again, i didnt read all the posts in detail, so dont flame me if he didnt use AWB:sweatsm:)

also, for a grad shoot like that, nothing is as handy as fill flash.

EXIF says D300 and AWB was used.. Anyway, I'm surprised too.. Like I mentioned, might be the reds fooling the AWB? I am not familiar with AWB.. I never trusted AWB not even for D2X and D3 unless I'm doing night shots and want it to correct the colour cast of the streetlamps. ;p Must be one kind of a lighting situation.... I'm really surprised myself that WB can make it look like flare. I'll go think about the reason behind it.

So I guess TS does not need to know the lens better, but need to know the body better. ;p

dont confuse him lah nikongod!
give the man enlightenment!:bsmilie:

back to topic, for a important shoot like this, i'll definitely shoot in RAW NEF, and i'll also pop along a whibal card.all you need is to take a shot of the whibal card under the same overcast skies, and you're ready to rock and roll.
hell, if you shoot in raw, shoot first, adjust later in LR or whatever pp program.
this is for WB issues.

the way i see the series posted by TS, slight handshake, insuff DOF, 'wrong' metering used, lack of knowledge of equipment are the main problems.

Personally, I have also found it challenging to use bright lenses like the 50 1.2 on bright days out in the open. Often get washout shots.

It is still possible to have issues with stray light even with the hood on, esp with fast lenses.

Fast lenses easier to control indoors, IMHO.

ha ha... I like the feeling of "screwing" in :sweatsm:

don't get the wrong idea :sweatsm:

I like it 'coz felt like screwing in a silencer on a pistol. That grating sound and feel of screw threads ;p

lol!!! Yes! I am very fond of all kind of hood. I just blew $500+ on a carbon one for my 300mm

haha, interesting. hope you dun have plates or heads fetish too. :)
