Nikon 35mm f1.8

Great pics Ben! Especially the one with the two basketball rings. :)

Hi I am thinking of buying this len, BnS is selling about 300 and DDE is selling about <310 cash. Should I buy from DDE? is there focusing problem on this Len as the sigma 30mm f1.4? I wants to get this lens to take in indoor situation is this suitable? Thanks for answering.

I would recommend you to buy a local set with warrenty as it's only $330 to $350. DDE sell gray sets so it's probably wiser to pay $20-$40 more to get a year warrenty.

For indoor situation, you must make sure you have PLENTY of room to run about because the focal lenght is fixed thus you will need to move in and out to frame and compose your picture. It will be fine if you are using it for casual meals with a few friends or family but if you are shooting an event, I would say it's not advisable.

not exactly not advisable(i shoot only primes even for events). but you need to know exactly what your lens will/can and will not/cannot do. that way you can pre empt and pick the right lens for the situation. my most used FL is 50mm on FX (≈35 on DX) and i find it fits my shooting style perfectly. the 35 1.8 is a fantastic lens and would work nicely for a group portraits of <8 ppl there about. try it out and see if it fits your shooting style.

It's about S$290 in HK, if anyone is interested.

Actually, 35mm is pretty ok on FX. Many excellent photographers I know shoot at 35mm on FX.

ok.. this is a little off topic, but since you brought it up i ll intrude a little =P my next step is either a 35, or an 85 (both manual). i ve played with the 85mm fl before and it had a certain feel to it which i quite liked but never developed on. i prefer the up close to stand off shooting though, so im considering the 35mm fl. thing is, i ve never felt particularly attracted to the 35mm perspective, but i do know alot of people really like it. do you shoot 35 on fx and have you any points about it that you think are really special about the perspective? (not any lens in particular. but or reference i am considering the 35 1.4 ais)

Hi! Unfortunately, I'm on DX by default. I do use the FX format occasionally, but I personally can't comment further.

I think photographers such as Ryan Brenizer and locally, we have Joho and gang who shoot with 35mm and achieve excellent results. I'm not here to publicize anyone's work, so I won't provide the links.

Price update; $326 at SLR Revolution - bought it yesterday.

Stock in so fast? I bought it just before CNY and it's the last piece. Yup, it's the cheapest already. One of the guys told me is $330 and luckily i called the next day and the lady told me is $326

Hello CS members
I was just wondering if 35mm is good enough for indoor group shot on the DX body. I'm DX body user and getting one wide angle lens for indoor group shot. As i can't afford high price, it would be much appreciated if u guys can advice me. My budget is around 300 bucks. It might be too low for wide angle lens but just please get me some ideas.

Cheers!

Happy new year....:)

It can be used, although many situations may require use of wider lenses. Ever considered the simple 18-55mm?

What lens do you own now? Presumably you have a kit lens (eg. 18-55 or 18-105, something like that)
For indoor group shot, perhaps the $300 will be better spent on an external flash.

Don't think 35mm is wide enough on DX unless just 2 or 3 people from about 1.5m and further.

Currently I'm using 18-70mm kit lens and the body is D200. My concern is low light performance and wide angle of view as my D200 can't go high iso in poor light indoor situation. Of course there is wider lenses than 35mm one unless the budget is not a problem.

Anyway thanks for you guys advices.

If that's the case, I'd get a flash. You can get a decent one for about the same price as the 35mm lens.

I'd second the suggestion of getting a flash for the $300. I think it'll make more of a difference than using a fast (not-so-wide) prime :)

Although flash photography is another notorious learning curve to go through, but it's definitely more bang for the buck than a wide aperture lens.

I'd have to agree with u there :)

I totally forgot of getting external flash. Really good suggestion. Thanks again little and big brothers.
Now I have to explore about external flash. B-)
