Hi,

Should I go for the new Nikon 35mm f1.8 or Sigma 30mm f1.4?
I'm using D40. I knw 1.8 is different from 1.4 but just wanna have some inputs and some help to decide of w/c one to get.

Thanks in advance.

got money Sigma 30mm f1.4 its just better (if you get a sharp copy)
no money Nikkor 35mm f1.8 it gets the job done well

i have the nikkor because i could not justify the price difference for miniscule differences in image quality.

It's always about the money when it comes to lenses.

I am still not sure if the statement "Sigma 30mm f1.4 its just better" has been proven.

To me a no-brainer question - get the Nikkor.

Nikkor obviously for its price / performance :)

sigma AF30 f1.4, provided u can get a good copy.

amazingly sharp at f1.4.

it is simply a fantastic lens made by... SIGMA! used to own one until i change to FX.

doubters, go and try it out if u can. u will be amazed.

I used to own a Sigma as well... 100% agree with you! Its an amazing lens but costs 2x compared to Nikon version but then its a 1.4 ;)

the build quality is also much better..albeit on a weight penalty.

Check out DPReview. They have just done up a review of the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G.

i will go for sigma 1.4 mine very sharp. its yr call, try out both before which suits your needs best

One of the non Nikon lens worth owning.

Very sharp, very good performance, fast focusing too.

Very good if you do a lot of low light photography.

Yea get the sigma 30mm F1.4.. it is even sharper then the nikkor 50mm F1.4 at F1.4 so go figure it out..

The sigma also has better bokeh.. more cream and smoother background.

I went down to John 3:16 today and tried out the Sigma f/1.4. The bokeh is  but it does with a price though. ;)

I think it's pretty much like asking 50/1.8 or 50/1.4. Both are good lenses and it depends on how much money one is willing to fork out.

However, I have reservations for the Sigma because there tend to be front or back focusing issues with Sigma lenses. Even after calibration it's not perfect. Nikkors are mostly spot on.

You are right on this.. nikkor lens is dead accurate in focusing.. But i think the sigma wins interm of color, sharpness and bokeh.;)

I do not agree that Sigma wins interm of color. Sigma lenses tend to have slight yellow cast.

Sigma colours are a bit like Leica. Maybe they got some technology after Leica let them manufacture some of their lenses. I personally prefer Nikkor colours because they are more neutral and consistent. Sigma colours differ from lens to lens. For Nikkors, I am confident that the colours are still very similar when I change to another lens.

I got a feeling Sigma will be quite insulted by this comparison against the 35/1.8G. :) Nikon appears to have cut corners to bring out a sharp 35mm DX lens at the expense of distortion and CA, things that most casual users do not really care about, but would be serious issues in large prints. There must be a reason for the much higher price for the Sigma (beyond the larger aperture).

Rgds
