Nikon 35mm f1.8 or Sigma 30mm f1.4?

I got a feeling Sigma will be quite insulted by this comparison against the 35/1.8G. :) Nikon appears to have cut corners to bring out a sharp 35mm DX lens at the expense of distortion and CA, things that most casual users do not really care about, but would be serious issues in large prints. There must be a reason for the much higher price for the Sigma (beyond the larger aperture).

Who knows? They might just drop their prices because previously they have no competition from the original manufacturer. ;p

Still I think they must get their front/back focusing problem fixed before they can be really in contention. Especially with these fast lenses, slightly OOF means it's OOF. Learnt my lesson with Sigma 24/1.8. It's a sharp lens when it's in focus but most of the time it's not where you want the focus to be. Never had a focusing issue with Nikkor 28/1.4 even at f/1.4.

Totally agree -- third party manufacturers often don't deliver in terms of AF accuracy or auto metering.

But, that said, at large apertures, strange things can happen. Sometimes these issues are inherent in the lens design rather than poor mfg or QC. Take the Nikon 50/1.4D for eg; it is difficult to get sharp images at f1.4-f2 not because of poor AF. I have the 35/2 and do not experience similar issues at f2.

KRW had a very interesting comparison of the 50 1.4 vs 1.2 and he concluded that the presence of spherical aberration in the 1.4 can lead to focus errors even with the best MF focusing techniques! I'm hoping that the new 1.4G does not have the same problem. :)

"See how the image from the 50mm f/1.4 seems out of focus at f/2? That's focus shift due to spherical aberration." -- KRW

I do not agree that Sigma wins interm of color. Sigma lenses tend to have slight yellow cast.

No, only those lower end sigma tend to have yellow cast. If u have tried their high end zoom and prime, the color is quite neutral. This sigma 30mm is one of the best prime i tried and i bet it is the last prime i going to sell unless i go fx.

He's right. The secondary focus due to spherical aberration can fool the AF sensor into thinking that it's the best focus when in fact the primary focus is off.

Seconded, I was in fact considering recently to sell and use the money to help fund a preowned long tele, but just cannot give up such sharp lens.

My copy no color cast.

I just own one Sigma 30mm f1.4, all that i can
say is, ITS GREAT! Super sharp and really helps
when youre in a real low light situation.
How much is it here locally?
I got it in Hong Kong for about $500+ and thanks
to my mum. ;)

One example i took with it. After the croppings.
And the distortions isn't that visible.

does it have international warrenty?
seems a lot cheaper

35/1.4 the best

That is a AIS lens.. TS is comparing another 2 lens.. but basically mine experiences told me the sigma 30mm f1.4 and 50mm f1.4 prawns the nikkor 50mm F1.4/ F1.8 in term of picture quality..;) Test and compared with my own eyes hundreds of times..

it seems to me nikon has more lens distortion.
And sigma is sharper.

Anyone did test for the 2 lens before?

Sigma 30mm f1.4 for me
I sold my 50mm 1.8 because I switch to Sigma.

own both and the 35 f2 too

Sigma 30mm f1.4 wins hands down in sharpness.

the f1.8 just feels weird without the distance scale. and barrel distortion is quite obvious when taking group shots.

both lens are a little soft wide open. but the sigma is amazing from F2.2 onwards while the nikon needs f4 to achieve the same level of sharpness.

but the nikon can focus closer.

hmmm, seems like we got a winner here...:)

also bokeh wise...the sigma is the winner

Great that more and more peoples who owns the lenses share their experiences.. Nikkor lenses are great but third party lenses are not for play play also. The Sigma 30mm & 50mm F1.4 is really heaven and earth compare to the original makers.

One thing i dun like is the paint peeling and the slightly lower focusing accuracy at widest.

but the 35mm f1.8 is really a very cost effective prime
