I've the D90 and LX3.

I'll take the D90 anyday, the LX3 is a PITA to use.

You're in a photography forum and not Hardwarezone, cannot anyhow smoke people about camera equipment.

Don't anyhow pewpewpew.

You can consider the Nikon 35mm f/1.4 AiS which has a maximum aperture that is nearly 1 stop bigger than the 35mm 1.8.

OR, the Sigma 30mm as bruggink has advised.

Can't think of any other ~35mm lenses with a bigger maximum aperture that will mount on your D90.
though AiS lens cannnot meter on D90.

I am a newbie who owns a D90 (18-55mm and 35mm) and was on a holiday to china recently with a friend who owns the famous LX3.

I must say, both has its pros and cons....
Personally, I feel that LX3 ISO above 800 is pretty bad already, though from the LCD screen of the camera it looks very sharp and nice (marketing HW gimmick). Bottomline it still has its limitation as a PnS like shutter lag, focusing speed and ISO noise.

In terms of low light environment, 35mm was my street/night/indoor and I am simply very satisfied with the results. I can shoot very vibrant/sharp/colourful pictures at ~ISO800 comfortably at ~1/60 shutter and F2.0-3.5 aperture. Fast focusing speed at night is very appreciated too given its large aperture especially when u need to capture the right moment and also focus on the correct subject FAST at low light. Focusing is very important particularly when u are working with such a narrow DOV. When I visited one of the food street at night in Beijing, I was busy snapping away with my D90 and 35mm in one hand, while the other was holding on to a sitck of skewered meat, snapping, eating, snapping eating.... ;p

And yes I agree with the bros that the person behind the camera matters a lot more than the equipment, I still have loads to learn with my current setup. I guess bottomline is to question what we (the photographer) could have done better in such situations e.g. composition, settings, angle etc ;)

Happy snapping :)

my friend just got the 35 and I find it pretty awesome for general shooting ~

and i find it cute when you use the term PEWPEW xD

I have both lx3 and d300, the compact will not win dslr with photoquality. Iso above 400 is unacceptable to me. But the light weight and big aperature plays a big role to get usable photos with 1/5 shutter indoor at iso 200. Learn to control your dslr and better shooting techniques. I can only hand held 1/15 on dslr. Still practicing. As for 35mm I see lots of resale in the bns, seems like a lot people buy on impulse not knowing what is their comfortable range. Don't make the same mistake, try as what other says, work with 35 at ur current lens.

okay okay

but I find that LX3 give me less motion blur pictures compared to D90 without using tripod. I think it is because my D90 18-70mm lens got no VR. Either that or I am newb I din get the shutter speed right. Hopefully, if I get 35mm, I can go faster shutter speed tio bo?

digilux 4 ftw.

lx3 is indeed a great compact.

I suggest you go over to the Newbies thread and read the guide that's stickied there.

Helped me understand a whole lot more before i got my cam, and got past my learning curve fairly fast. Too bad school's preventing me from doing any shots for now.

Anyway, to add on to the reading, the 35mm with the 1.8 aperture would get you a faster shutter speed, but there are alternatives such as increasing your ISO and just plain holding the camera more steadily.

Ideally you should be getting better results than the LX3.

More like the LX3 has Mega OIS... in addition one will be working with a smaller camera/shorter focal length so less of a shake?

after playing with 35mm for a couple of days, i am pleased to confirm that my D90 low light capability is now even better than LX3. hee hee.

but hor...dis D90 the white balance a bit crazy wan...depending whether street light is yellow or white, it make my pic very different. i am now fiddling with WB setting...wah liao what is incandescent mean hah? i only know what is fluorescent.

long thin light tubes with white light generally, set to fluorescent.

round light bulbs, set to incandescent.

settings should suffice for most of the lightings around singapore.

glad to know that you are playing around with your 35mm more. at least u know that the amount of money you paid for the D90 and 35mm is worth it over the LX3.

In any case to capture the ornate details of the roof or wide-angle view of the pews and altar, you might need to stop down to a smaller aperture like f/5.6 to f/11 to gain depth of field, which would make you wonder why you needed a fast lens to start with. In those cases a tripod is a must.

Very good advice by Entity. All the while chasing a fast lens, remember that u will not get the dof that u require as well ( although often said that wider lenses are a little more tolerant in that respect, f1.8 is pretty large an aperture still )

Also. the 35mm ain't exactly wide if u r talkin about shooting to include more of the church interior.

I have shot some of the european churches before with my old d80, and sometimes the 12mm end of my 12-24 just doesn seem wide enough :bsmilie:

the 18-70mm is a budget version of the 16-85mm vr, having used the 18-70mm before i can tell you that a tripod is badly needed for this lens at night.
vr does help in some ways even though fast aperture is still the best option, don't believe it you can try the cheap 18-55mm vr and see how it performs against the 18-70mm in night shots.

shorter range lens also have more chance of acquiring a stable shot as long as your shutter speed is not too slow like more than 1/4.

the best if you are using those without internal motor. like D5000. and it is cheap. really cheap.

Recommended by Ken Rockwell.. Auto Iso can go up to ISO3200 without printing problem.
