i've a 17-55 on my d200 and still very satisfy with this combination for travel. only draw back is that i find its reach not long enough sometimes. is it a good choice to get this lens?

of cos is good
i finally got mine yst .. after renting for almost every jobs

but is not feasible to use on a DX body cos u will lost on the wide side
since 17-55 is not enough reach for you. u might want to consider the 70-300 VR. This lens is not bad for its price consider u can use it on both DX and FX

p/s: there another 2pcs at Alan Photo SLS, do not ask me how much i buy cos i know the pple there.
tks

Love my 24-70 Nikkor :D

Is the sealing on the 24-70mm supposed to be bad? My copy has a small spot of dust smacked right in the middle of the rear element within the lens, and it's not even a month old yet. Will Nikon clean it up if it's still under warranty? I don't care if it's at the corners, but right in the middle?

Is it that obvious in the pictures or only pricking your eyes while looking at the rear element? My experience with them is, no free service for lens dust removal as they claim that dust is unavoidable :(

Hi all,

can anyone kindly explain to me why the 24-70 shouldn't be used on a D80?

When I saw the price of that lens, I cursed and sweared! Was thinking how can a lens cost so much when third party equivalents like the tamron could cost many times less?! Its almost twice my monthly salary! But what do I know, as long as its that expensive and being a photo hobbyist, I guess I will never know, even though I own a full frame dslr!

24-70mm is quite limiting on a crop factor dslr, unless you dont mind the widest end being equivalent to a 36mm focal length.

So can I say that, other than the actual pic being 24*1.5 - 70*1.5, there's no other issues?

Nah, can't see it in pictures but it's an eyesore to me man.

That issue is enough to stop me from spending that kind of money for what I feel is a slight handicapped focal length for events which I think this lens is originally best suited for. :)

Don't lose your sleep over it bro..Dusts are inevitable ;) My friend bought a Minolta 85mm 1.4 lens filled with dust and guess what the pictures came out damn beautiful with hardly any noticeable dust ;)

Tks guys for all ur feedback on this. Appreciate it~

I ain't some rich man son, saved for an entire year for this and so abit KS after reading a comparison report here:

Sigma24-70 VS Nikon 24-70

However tried both the lenses and my hearts still goes out to Nikon. Just thinking should I get it now or wait...Lords, AP and John all out of stock...due to F1 I guess...maybe some will be selling once F1 is over.

Anyway tks guys...ur comments are very objective and assuring for me to take this leap~

I personally read anything from Fengniao with a spoonful of salt...

TS - i would suggest renting 24-70 nikon lens to play around with it. if u like it, get it and enjoy it.

if you like, you can borrow mine.

Was thinking of getting this glass (second hand) after i get my Dec 09 bonus ;p

But after reading this forum, most of you commented that it not worth on a DX. (i use a D80:cry:)

Some recommand 17-55 instead for DX, but @kenrockwell.com. He commented that 18-55 VR get same sharp pic as 17-55 f2.8. Get the later only if u need metal for self defense:bsmilie:

I like to take pic of children expression (indoor and outdoor) 24-70 give more space between me & subject. So children don shy away that easily. Rental 70-200mmVR b4 was too heavy.

Should i take the plunge ????

Hi Shawn,

I was exactly in the same situation as you just 1 week back.

I'm just a beginner amateur who took up photography cos of my 1 yr old son. Pls allow me to share with you what I felt after I bought the 24-70 f/2.8 in Hongkong.

BTW, I was using the a D80 with the 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 before i bought the 24-70.

The differences that I realized so far after 1 week of use during my hong kong holiday are:

Pros:
1. Very much faster focusing
2. Sharper pictures with better contrast
3. Nicer colors
4. Able to take decent pic of my son even in poor lighting, at 70mm cos of the f/2.8 throughout the zoom.

Cons:
1. Serious camera lens unbalance.
2. Have to stand much further back due to the increased wide end to 24mm. Is it because it's used on a D80? not sure myself.
3. No VR, so I've really got to steady my hands.
4. Have to buy new camera bag as the old one can't fit anymore.

I think one of the reason you can consider is that the 17-55 DX cannot be used on a FF camera (Which I intend to upgrade to next time), therefore if you were to upgrade, you can't use it on your new cam.

I hope what I share with you helps.

Maybe you can get a 50mm f/1.4 to try out first. The larger aperture really helps to take nicer pics of people. I'm intending to buy a cheap 50mm f/1.4 AF-D to try.

Hope this helps. =)

P.S. don't bother getting a 2nd hand, the price difference is not that great. Just get a new one.

I personally think the Tammy 17-50 VC is a better buy than both the 24-70 and 17-55 from Nikon. The VC is incredible, the focusing speed is decent but good enough for most situations. If you're a cropped camera, go with something more suitable.

The 24-70mm lens is really not Value for money. The sharpness & focus is one of the worse lens so far I have use.

lol the biggest joke of the year

i read ur comments with a big laugh..

either u are crazy with ur comments, or Nikon is crazy to price such a "not value for money" lens at such a high premium..
