Nikon 24-120 f4 vs Sigma 24-70 f2.8 HSM

Which would you recommend?

The real comparison should be using Sigma 24-70mm rather than the nikon's.

I dun like the sigma for 2 reasons:
1. The barrel extends when zoom.
2. The filter diameter is damn huge.... (82mm)

For me, in low light, VR makes the real difference & also greater depth of field with smaller aperture more important. Even with f2.8, can easily get handshakes. Also, sharp focus more important than fast focus. But why the talk on the Nikon 24-70, thought topic is on the Sigma.

Ha ha.. I used sigma 24-70. It sucks. It has focussing problem. For me, I will choose NIKON 24-120 even though it is f4.

If this is between the Nikon 24-70 vs 24-120, there can be a real tough tussel inside in having to choose what we really want, which is the best of everything sans compromises. I see a lot of fascination with f2.8 lens like they are something magical that will make all our photos come out perfect. But I find that in real life, in actual photo taking, its more than just apertures which makes the difference. Last week I fired away a few hundred portrait shots in low light, just before the sun set, using a fixed 85mm with f1.8. The lens was super sharp, superb for its intended purpose. But lots of the photos have to be junked due to blur resulting from handshakes (unless pushed all the way to ISO 3200 & even then there's no guarantee of avoiding handshakes). On the other hand using my 16-35mm f4 with VR almost all photos were sharp. Dont have the 24-120 to compare but I should think they will be the same. As for the Sigma I think all the talk of having to calibrate or tune the focussing already drives me off. But this is only my view...

i ve no experience with either lens, but you can take a look at these tests and see if they help

nikkor 24-120 Nikkor AF-S 24-120mm f/4G ED VR (FX) - Review / Test Report
sigma 24- 70 Sigma AF 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM (FX) - Review / Test Report

having seen them, i would seriously consider whether you would still use f/2.8 on the sigma. best bet would be to find a copy to play with and test first to see if its ok.

just a personal tip, you might want to buy 3rd party lenses 2nd hand cos they loose as much as 20-30% of value from the retail price to 2nd hand price.
