Thanks for the pictures, chngpe01. Very cute dog!!! =D
My personally impression on those photos is that the shallow depth is not very "impressive"... maybe the smaller sensor size is still bugging me... just my personal view... On the other hand, I am quite impressed with the level of sharpness...

Thanks again for the pictures!!!

Not sure what is your expectation on the shallow depth of field?

The DOF is not just the camera and its sensor size alone, but also largely dependent on the type of lens and its resolving power. Bear in mind that these images are taken with the kit zoom lenses not even the prime lenses.

If you want to compare DOF for example, a D3 with 24-70mm AFS lens pale in comparison to a D3 with a 85mm f1.4 lens. And then even D3 with a 85mm f1.4 cannot compare to a D3 with a DC 135mm f2 lens.

Some more images

f5.6 using a 30- 110mm zoom kit lens at 110mm

Personally the background (the granite floor and furniture legs) looks rather decent to me considering the type of lens

Close up. Look at the DOF between the back and front of the cap and then also the background

Let's look at how shallow the DOF is on a cat face.

Close up look.
The red circled area is the focus area, whereas the purple circled is the rear. Considering a depth of a couple of cm, again I think this is pretty decent.

The next two images is not to show how sharp the lens is but more on how it handle the dark subjects and the shadow areas as well as the performance of the iso at 3200. Also the VR performance,. Image taken hand held not resting on any support too.

1/13secs, f5.6, Auto white blance, matrix meterring, ISO 3200, Manual mode

Details in a black cat.

See the details, in the eyes at ISO 3200. Noise well controlled

My good friend, Bryan Foong aka "Lumiere" sent me a few casual images, that was taken on a J1 while he was at work.

Thanks for more pictures... really appreciated your effort to end my doubt of this camera....in fact, when I talked to some of my friends and their concern of this camera is the relatively smaller sensor. With the pictures you posted, I am sure many newbies like us will have more confident with this camera. I can't wait to see some test shots with FX/DX lenses with this baby...

Thank you once again, chngpe01

You are welcome.

I am not a very technical type of photographer, ie I rely more on what I see and not totally on the technical specs. Having say that, initially, I also have my reservation with the sensor size. However, after having the chance to try out the cameras and lenses quite extensively, I am convinced that the sensor size wasn't much an issue as many perceived it to be.

The V1 for me is a good and handy camera for my onsite recce, travel as well as a fun camera. Afterall my D3 and D700 are just too heavy and bulky for any recreational and hobby purposes.

I am rather happy with my V1, but not for long, cos my wife and daughter are eyeing it . :(

The new sensor's technology seems promising. Phase detection AF embedded into the sensor. Maybe we will see APSC and Full frame sensor with this technology too? Anyone try it yet? nikon said that the sensor have full time Phase detection AF on at all time during video. Sound like sony?

Well, there is always the pink J1 to go along with the ladies. :)

Is this a HDR picture or one with very pushed up shadow areas, cause it looks like one.
IMHO, play with the curves in PP to bring back some realism.

Honestly, I can't say I'm convinced by the camera's performance.
Dark/black colored things seem to have a purple cast.

Tried out with 2 dogs running towards me. Focus was locked on the dog behind. For IQ, nothing will beat your big guns D3s with nano lenses. But if you are looking for handy camera with lots of fun factor. Nikon 1 cameras might be worth looking at.

Hey guys, I was hoping someone can explain to me what kind of users the V1 is aimed at. I've been trying to decide between the NEX and the 1 series, but I just simply can't come up with a conclusion despite all the reviews. Would really appreciate some input here. And yes, I am also a Nikon D700 user, but I don't want to let that skew my judgement and end up with the wrong camera. I'm going to use the V1/NEX as my main camera as I am letting go of my FF DSLR kit.

It depend on what you use the D700 for.

V1 is never meant to replace the D700, its like apple and pear. But I have a friend who sold his DSLR and now uses only a M4/3, cos he travel very often and he is shoots mainly street, people and travel.

I have the D700 and D3, while they serve me in my work they are too heavy and bulky. But the V1 for me is a camera for street and travel and everyday fun photography. Where a light, non intrusive, and having a number of DSLR features camera is useful to be used when the situation demand. At the same time, I believe Nikon is also aiming at the segment of the DSRL owners, like us who have a couple our DSLR lenses and wishes to used it on the V1 or J1 to take advantage of what the lenses offers where the small lenses cannot.

And yes I am going to use it on my multi copter too. see this Facebook

Hope it helps

Thanks, that was very helpful. I am getting rid of my D700 for a lighter setup. But the problem for me still is where the 1 series fits in, and who it is catered for compared to the Sony NEX series. Yeah reviews, noise level blah blah I see all that already, but the reviews still don't say who exactly the 1 series is for. Is it suitable for someone who is looking to go for a lighter main camera? Or is it more suitable as a backup camera compared to the NEX which has a better suitability as a main camera? Or is the 1 series a fantastic setup for those looking to reduce their carry load? Hope to hear more from you guys.

Comparing these two (D3 vs V1) is more like durian versus cherry...
