A translated 16-85 review article here.

How I'm a at loss of whether to buy the 16-85 or 18-200... :( Giving me a big headache.

I am searching for a general purpose lens and was at a loss whether to get the 16-85 or 18-200 also. I was also intending to get a wide angle for landscape also and was eyeing the sigma 10-20.

Imo, it helps to go to the shops and play around with the lenses. I feel that 16mm is wide enough for me, and the IQ at f8-f11 seems to be great from the french review. The zoom at 85mm felt sufficient, while have a 200mm max is a huge advantage I don't really see it as something I will use often on the streets. Furtermore the IQ on test samples seems really good.

The only thing that's a turn-off atm is it's price. If only it's on the 800+ range it might feel more comfy for my poor student budget... =D

Combo the 16-85mm + 70-300 or w/ a faster 70-200 lens will be great for my purpose, since I will not use the later range unless I am doing very specific subjects such as portraits or wildlife.

But if budget permits, the 17-55mm glass is the best and most versertile lens on the streets. But for now, the 16-85 will have to do. :)

I feel the same too... I think I will seldom use the longer end too. BTW considered the Tamron 17-50? You might be able to get the 17-55 for a good price now. Suddenly got alot of ppl selling...

Considering the price of the 18-200mm vs the 16-85mm I would head straight for the 18-200mm.

Unless of course you need something starting att 24mm rather than 28mm (135 film terms)

Given a choice, I'd choose the 16-85mm, cos that's the everyday range, at least for me. I'd have used the longer reach if I were on holidays. But how many holidays can I manage a year? And basing on the French review alone, this new lens seems to have some potential!

Good price? Still hovering around the 2K region leh... Oh well, I got no moolah for fast lens, that's why I had a flash! :bsmilie:

I see at least got 3 on sale. Competition's heating up... :P Now $1.6k+...

haha, I think I'll just settle with a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 with built in motor. =D Just need to hope and pray that I get a good copy when I do!

I am still having my headache... I've actually bought the 18-200 1 day before the announced the 16-85... it's in the WTS forum and someone already reserved it, so think I'll be getting my 16-85 really soon. called up a couple of shops and their range's all around $950.

That's the problem with many people (me included) - the headache is because we got too much expendible cash! You got a classic case of BBB virus! :bsmilie:

If you already got a 18-200mm which many consider it the only lens, then maximise its potential lor.

Too much cash? Wish I had that problem too! Think I'll wait for more real-user reviews and for the price to drop a bit first.... :p

Haha... no man, I wish that was the case. Buying the 16-85 to replace the 18-200! If I sell off I'll still be able to recoup some cash. I think I'll have more use of the wide than zoom. :P In future, if I really decide to get a tele, a 70-300 addition will be better combo. :D

Depending on how people look at it, to me I call it quick decision and decisive, if you believe you made a mistake, making a quick correction is better than stick on to the old one and feeling bad, after some delay, then decide to make the correction may incurr more losses.

:D Already did. Got my 16-85, and have confirmed a buyer for my 18-200, minimal loss thanks to his generous offer.

Now that I have both lens on hand, hopefully I can find time to make a quick comparison for you guys before he comes and collect it from me. ;)

$950 from MS. Got the last piece... Called a couple of other outlets and TK still got stock at $950 as of yesterday. Cathay also have but selling at $990, and AP no more.

I'll see if I can post a couple of shots later today.

Build-wise not much difference, but weight wise the 16-85 feels much lighter on the D300. Looks less pro also since it's quite small. :P Haven't really pixel peep yet, but the 24mm vs 28mm wide is quite significant, and I think I can live without the 85-200mm loss. I tried zooming from 85-200 a couple of times to get a feel of what I'm losing, and I'm quite happy to let it go. Don't think I'll use that range much.

BTW, it costs $200+ cheaper than the 18-200, and you can use that money to get a 2nd hand 70-300 for $400+ in future for better quality for a larger range.

Hope my 18-200 buyer don't read this! Later he fly my kite... :P

Hi Chongkm,
