not too much of an OT, but you see nikon releasing updated versions of DX lenses, thats because they dont fore-see a cheap fullframe to be produced for the masses anytime soon..

You think not too much OT but the Mod might not mah.

Updated version of DX? Which one? How come I missed all of them? Or, you mean those 18-XXX DX zoom? And, this 16-XXX DX zoom?

If I think along this line, maybe the 10.5FE and the 17-55 are the only DX version to replace the older lens. Sorry, not even replace but to coexist incase FF come back.

Canon hasnt ditched their 1.6x crop either. other 4/3 mounts are happy with their 2x crop.

Only the more serious hobbyists and the workhorses will look for something towards full-frame. on consumer price/value/performance wise, the 1.5X DX crop isnt probably going to phase out anytime.

C is not ditching becos N can't catch up. And, they give customer a choice to choose. :p
4/3 is different becos to them 4/3 is FF.

I know DX is not going to be phased out soon but didn't N tell us that there will not be FF for DSLR not too long ago. Man, I am glad that they "misrepresent" this info. Else, only way for FF is C.

look at many people happily touting the d2/300s, the d80s and the d40s.. convert all of them to fullframe and to make them buy a body at $3.9k (just a speculation) each? probably highly unlikely. .

Not all of them but some of them. Now, do we even have a choice beside 7K D3?

Maybe someone will ask me to buy a Kodak DSLR or use back film.

I am voicing my opinion so that people will think like me will know there is someone out there that have similar thinking as them. Maybe, just maybe if out voices are strong enough, N will listen. :)

I really hate to air these views. Make me look like an anit-nikon guy which I am not.

Maybe you can take a look at these articles for a more rounded view on DX vs FX.

personally i feel that as long as there's something that could fulfill our photographic needs, then it would be good enough - be it DX or FX or whatever...

anyway, back to the original topic, i would be very very interested to get this 16-85 VR lens if its really real... :)

:bsmilie:

I would have agree with u 1 year ago when i am still a canon user ....

You can't agree with me now becos you are not a canon user? heehee.. Ok, no more from me on this topic.. Think that's enough.

What a pity that the longer end aperture is not f4.5 like 18-70mm.

well guess we all have eyes to witness the evolution ... :)

Alright back to the topic , think sony already has a 16-80 lens so given nikon extra edges over the wide angles performance over the years I don't see why this rumour lens isn't possible :bsmilie:

i think it's real.
i think it's real.
i think it's real.

I think the quality isn't gonna top the 18-135 or 18-70. It will probably be your alternative to the 18-200 VR if u can't afford that.

Why? Because it was 'retailing' at 10k Baht, about 400 SGD?

I suspect it will be out with the 'replacement' for the D80/D40X as a kit lens.

I guess it should be a kit lens.

Nothing great about this lens, not IF and it is f5.6 at 85mm..... short and slow....

the rumoured name is Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 16-85mm DX SWM VR ED IF. should have IF.

Eh...look carefully at one of the pics. It read DX SWM VR ED IF.... it has IF lah...

I'll only get this IF:

1. AF accuracy speed is comparable to the current 18-70
2. EQ is on par with the 18-70 / 18-135
3. Distortion is minimal, won't expect it to be better than the 18-200...but not be worse!
4. VR is VRII not VRI

If the above is satisfied and the price tag is really around S$400. I'll get it! It'll be a good poor man's upgrade to the current stock of kit lens.

even if the AF speed is not that fast, and VRI, i wont mind paying $400 for it :P

nikkor kitlenses/zooms never had poor image qualities. even the cheapest dx zooms are decent.

have a couple of friends in thailand now.. maybe should ask them scout a bit :P

Agreed. Yes, please do. :)

I think AF speed will be fast as there is SWM :)

So the rumor has come true already. :bsmilie: Anyone got it yet? What's the retail price?

In Japan, it's retailing about S$1050 if I didn't get it wrong. Just went to Yodobashi. Sigma Macro 35mm is also out already in Jap and retailing about S$600.
