May I know what lens are you using and what's your setting? Or maybe you would like to post 1 or 2 photos here and let us see. Thanks. :)

Hi Zola,

I've taken some photo on marina barrage with D40x on kit lens 18-55 VR lens onhttp://fotologue.jp/redsuns
Any idea how to improve my settings to get better picture? taken around 9pm.
It was super windy that day, not sure if it is the cause..
curious on the IQ part on kit lens and 16-85mm lens.. like to see hows the picture fare on same exposure settings taken with diff lens on long exposure shots

Hi RedSuns85,

I've browse through your photos and notice they are not very sharp. Maybe you would like to sharpen it using PS to make it looks better. As for me I would prefer in-camera sharpening either +1 or +2.

I can't see you EXIF data setting, maybe you would like to share what is your shooting mode, aperture, exposure & ISO setting and from there I'll be able to see how to improve it.

Windy should not cause the problem of your photo shooting unless your tripod is shaky when the wind blow.

As for the IQ part, IMHO the 16-85mm lens has better sharpness over the 18-55mm kit lens. I've ever own a 18-70mm (D70 kit lens) & Nikkor 18-200mm VR lens few years back and I still find the 16-85 has better sharpness over the 2 of them.

Thanks Zola, you can view the EXIF data setting when you click on the picture itself, it will reveal the settings. Like to advised on the settings too thankss
Just started photography, try to make best out of the kit lens first haha

Thanks, I've browse through the EXIF settings, the aperture, exposure & ISO seems ok. Maybe in your next try, I suggest you adjust the EV to -3 or -5 so that the spot lights are not so bright and increase the in-camera sharpening to either +1 or +2 that should do. By the way are the photos shot in "M" mode?

Yup the shots are all in 'M" mode .. not sure why I cant get the star-burst effect so cleanly and sharp at F11.. Will try to do the EV and Sharpening the next time. Thanks !

Hi Erick, thanks for viewing & your appreciation. Congrats to your new purchase of D5K & welcome to the club.

For night photography, 1st you need a good stable tripod stand to mount your camera & remember to off your VR mode on the lens. As for setting, I mostly use F8-F11 for aperture, 10sec-30sec for exposure and 100-200 ISO. It's all depends on your own judgement on the light condition when you shoot, so as to suit the correct setting.

Last but not least "Practise Made Perfect". :)

Hi Zola! Thanks for the advise, will do that and mostly practise practise practise=) I message you if i got some question. Thanks bro!

No problem, do drop me a PM if you've any question. Happy Shooting! ;)

Just to add in some new shots taken with my D5000 on Saturday evening at the Barrage with NDP Preview Fireworks. It wasn't a good location to shoot & watch the fireworks there as the Marina Sands Resort block almost 80% of the view of the fireworks. Saw most of the photographers were disappointed with the view.

Here are some of the photos I would like to share. This round all photos are shot using Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 lens without editing just cropping.

Hi,

Can you share what is the benefit of turning off the VR when you mount your camera on a tripod? What difference would there be if VR is turned on instead?

Hi,

When you are shooting with a tripod and remote release (like in landscapes, for example), you should turn off the lens VR and IS settings to achieve sharper images.

Otherwise, when your camera goes looking for a vibration and doesn't find it, it will continue to look for one, which can cause a somewhat shaky result and possibly blurred backgrounds.
