Your son is a budding photographer :)

nic buddy, i think the composition is ok, but you might need to work on yr technical skills such as lighting. try to add a bit more contrast to yr pics. although yr pics n write up r interesting....., u seem to me ya more of an artist rather than a photographer. don't get me wrong, photography is an art too. anyway, keep the pics coming....

Have faith, bro... good series..;)

Hi there
yes, I do have some training in fine art. But that was quite sometime back. I do enjoy going around the Musuem to see art pieces. But I give up fine art quite sometime back.

Presently I am working as a graphic designer for the past 12 yrs. Still enjoying my work and my photography.

I think the lighting problem come with the location and the lens that I am using.

Thank for the comments and viewing.

LOST

Qingming. For the past 27 year without fail. I will go and paid my respect to my dad and grandparents. This year is the same as every other year but my mom tell us that. When my dad pass away on that day was also my dad birthday. My tear nearly roll down. I pretend to act cool but who know how i feel.

I do notices that the place was very peaceful and quiet. it is indeed a very good place to take some picture. I will be back for some photoshoot.

Great series you have here... I've been visiting but have not been leaving comments as I don't know how to comment on these photos... They are not really visually stunning... but they do tell stories... sometimes a little too sad...
Keep up the good work! :)

I meet his group of elder people play this chinese card (do not know the name). They were really friendly,

All I ask them was can I come in to take photography. Without fail the owner invitated me. This is what I saw and they are all neighbour.

I have to agree wit you that the photography that in my thread are not stunning. So far only 3 to 4 photography are good. The reason why i did not posted there is that I do not want it to over viewing it. I intend to send them for some comptition and judge by the other.

Taking photography in one room flat is not easily.
1. Lighting is a big problem.
2. composition is ever a big problem
3. The people you meet is another big problem some are nice.
Like today I was scolded by a old man for taking this photography.

Thank for the comment and viewing and keep on viewing.

Maybe I will organised a photoshoot at the end of the year or a exhibition.

When I ask Ah Kim a media (owner of the house) what happened if the police. This is what she show me.

Over the convensation I learn that in the past, they use to play card outside the house until the police come. I guess outside is more cool. Now they are play in ah kim house.

I also ask if she know Ah kim (thread 62) a media. She tell me that stupid man has cheated a lot of elderly people and now God is punishing him. There go my $10. But he look really poor man. All alone in the small smelly house.

I hope that would not happened to me when i am old.

When I come up from the coffee shop with a few packet of coffee. This what ah kim ask me to do. 4D number. I still remember the number 0724.

Nicholas68, I can see that you really feel toward you this particular subject matter, and the series. And I shall give what is very rare of me in this forum. My honest opinions. Should you find my comments unpleasant, do PM/SMS me so and I'd withdraw them.

Some shots are interesting, others less so. Seeing the shots in a series tells a lot more rather than as individuals. As a series, the pictures give an glimpse into a very different world, probably one that is alien to most CSers. The idea of the series is a good one. And such ideas are less common to come by, after all, good ideas are far harder to achieve than good technical skills.

What you have got -
- hint of slum tenement (more more, please.... the glue-sniffers)
- the inhabitants
- their lives
- their hardships
- their thoughts (this you need to give more thought on... you can do a lot better)
- documenting your feelings, somewhat
- conditions, homes, "friends"

The blurry images add to the feel of some of your shots. Like the one cutting a 4D scrapbook. The soft one showing the occupant's memories (photos in frames) is another case of soft=better.

However, some of the soft pictures could do with a reshoot (not asking you to go back to the same person, but you can bear it in mind and seize it when the opportunity arises).

Contrary to some opinions, stronger colors may NOT do your images justice. Nor would going B&W for all of them. The same goes for lighting.

What else next? I'd suggest focusing entire on the list above. The one shot of the flats and the hardcourt from the outside is somewhat a spoiler to the series. Look at your entire series and consider which you may want to reshoot (ie look for another opportunity for the same subject matter). Some of the images are really oddball in the collection and you may want to either re-title them, or, re-shoot them.

My sincere apologies for not having spent more time chatting with you yesterday. There is a lot of potential in your series. Let's find a chance to meet up again, I'll share some thoughts in person. Similarly, if you can bring the softcopies, I can show you some approaches to toning the pictures. Lastly, if you'd like, I can bring you to a couple of similar flats elsewhere, and show you what I mean in my points above.

Keep shooting, keep improving.

PS - Sathea is also very good in this.... ;)
