NEX E-mount 50mm f1.8

General reviews of SEL30F35 were below average, what is your view?

I find the 30mm 3.5 f ok , and handy for macro use on the NEX system. If you are looking for ultimate corner to corner sharpness, maybe this is not the lens for you.

I recommend to get 2 , is to do a real life comparison of the 2 lens and in terms of use, both lenses are quite different. 50mm is sharp and good, but are we comfortable with the working distance required ?

30mm Macro is not sharp , but compared to 50mm , are we better off using this lens as a walk about lens and for macro ?

Since Barney-chan didnt specified his needs, getting both is the best

I guess if money is no issue, he would have got both of them instead... End of d day, depends on what he wants to use the lens for and d budget he is having.

I find the 30mm F3.5 Macro lens really very sharp in the center wide open, but not in the corners even stopped down. As I have the Sigma 30mm, I won't use it for normal use, but its great for product shots and real close ups.

Really like the bokeh and sharpness of the 50mm f1.8, but cannot get used to silver lens with black Nex 7 body. Looks weird to me.

Anyway, at retail price of $375 (last check with SLRR), it is a decent price lens. Maybe it is made in china with cheaper labour, compared to the CZ24mm f1.8 which is made in Japan.

50mm f1.8 has lots of stocks now in most of the shops, and still surprised to find used set trying to sell at similar retail price.

Y like to out 50mm ah?
50mm cropped -> 75mm, rite?
if FF the say... but for ASP-C
this range is like not here not there...

~rather 35mm then next come out 85mm better...

To me both are similar in sharpness. And they are different lenses, can't say one is better or worse

Just something I notice about the 50mm....

On the Nex-5 in the 'Intelligent Auto' mode, the lens is able to use F1.8 for low lighting... But on the Nex-7 in the 'Intelligent Auto' mode, the lens is only able to choose F2.0 max for low lighting
I tried with lens cap on for maximum darkest for both

Anyone else got this observation? and anyone got an answer for this difference? ;p

No idea. But does it matter if we are on I auto ?

the current i-Auto algorithm of the Nex-7 not fully maximizing the potential of the 50mm. Hope Sony can release a firmware upgrade soon

How is this compared if I used a LA-EA2 adapter with a 50F14

Its quite widely known that the 50mm 1.4 needs to be stopped down to +/1 F2 to be sharp . i think the 50mm 1.8 e-mount is sharper wide open.

I have a question, let say I'm using the Sony sel 50mm f1.8 OSS, I shoot it in MF, will the OSS still b in play? Or the OSS only works when I shoot in AF mode? As I prefer to shoot in MF, so does it means this Sony lense is not suitable for me whereby a Nikon 50mm f1.8d is more than enough for me which cost much lesser?

I think OSS still works... then again, a Minolta MD 50/1.7 would be even cheaper...

So will the Contax CY Zeiss Planar 50/1.7, love the 3D pop and tack sharpness from it... :bsmilie:

Expensive for a 50/1.7, but it guess it's cheap for a zeiss. Might get it nx time >.<

Haha. It's a keeper. Outstanding performance despite being an old lens. Bigturbo is selling one now in BnS. Go check it out.

Many reviews are positive for the 50mm, but not for the 30mm macro.
For me, the 50mm gets my vote as I'm not into macro...

But I find 50mm is a bit too tight for general shooting and the long mfd means can't really use for shooting small-ish items. If the mfd was halved would definitely bbb.
