[News] Panasonic Lumix DMC-GM1

Oh well, not again. :) The Japanese model comes only with Japanese menus, you won't be able to switch it to English ever. It can't be flashed to a non-Japanese firmware even once Panasonic releases updates. Your only option in Japan would be to buy an overseas model but those models usually retail at RRP and so they are more expensive than here in SG. Of course if you can read Japanese I highly recommend buying the Japanese model. All this is only the case with Panasonic and Sony, all other camera brands come with English menus even in Japan.

Suggest making this a sticky :)

(1) jap model doesn't come with English and one can't ever get English even with flashing the firmware. Good idea to start learning Jap ;)

(2) savings wise, there's not much point buying an overseas model in Japan.

(3) Panasonic will NOT honor international warranties. There are many shops in HK that will say their sets have international warranty but that's a scam. You need the original warranty card & receipt to claim for local sets hence note that when buying 2nd hand.

(4) Olympus will honor international warranty. You need at least photocopies of the warranty card and receipt to claim. They are more flexible coming to this , kudos to them for this.

Agreed, just not with point 4. :) If you do your research, you can save quite a few $ in JP. If you have decent negotiation skills you can get great discounts in stores which challenge the cheapest online offers in Japan. Also, even online you can save money, you just need to know here to look. ;)

But point 4 .... ah , what happened with Oly ? Share share.

I still more experienced with shopping for camera stuff in HK as opposed to Japan so will definitely be happy to learn more abt Japan and see which is really the nose-bleed worthy to get side.

I find amazon JP offerings quite attractive for Oly stuff. Of cos if u dig harder, and go for those other JP stores, u can get better pricing but the convenience of the delivery system at convenient stores is too attractive for me :p

Thanks :)

Especially Oly's accessories are cheaper and easily available in Japan, it's really annoying to source them here in SG. Usually I use http://kakaku.com/camera to hunt for the best price first [they inlcude amazon.co.jp too but not yodobashi.com] and use it to negotiate a good deal in store.

Vengels and Shane , I PM u both the quote I got le.

Quite good price comparing with the HK RRP zan82 shared but my advice is let's wait for SG street pricing first as a comparison :)

Heard from a friend who heard from a dealer, I clarified...sounds like Friday is the "Dealer launch"

Just an update - launch took place this evening... as wonglp said, actual availability expected to be mid-December, some dealers may get stock slightly earlier.

Problem with going to Japan is that you end up spending more because you will not leave that place with just that camera you want. That is why Japan is "toxic land".

Amazon JP is the only way to shop "in Japan" with a biochemical suit. But that depends... if you know the language and know how to search, the damage can be quite hardcore too... but it beats seeing the objects before you and being able to touch them... ha ha ha...

Sorry guys. Just got to this post... will go back to the topic...

Wonglp, did you manage to get some event pictures? And of the GM-1 in its various versions?

Mid Dec 13? Just nice for X' mas and New Year outings shoot with this compact camera.

Anywhere selling just the lens alone?

my dealer told me its sold as a kit first and then the lens alone version after a month or 2.

looking forward to the Dec 3 cause wonglp's bringing his GM1 along, nothing beats handling the camera physically :)
