Seriously, 280 for a f1.4 lens with a body... If I am looking for a camera to start with, I grab it straight away.... The lens alone cost more than 280.

I was very tempted by this.... but I have too may bodies. I just bought a excellent condition M42 mount Pentax H1a from a very nice fellow CS'er today. It's a real beauty and without meter! Shuttle curtain is clean and shuttle speed is accurate. :)

Rah, so you were the one! I was considering to purchase that, but the lack of a meter held me back for too long till it was gone. Ah well, fastest finger first. You would appreciate it more anyway. Enjoy your purchase! ;)

Once you see something that you like, if the price is right, go for it. :)

Oh chiif, you've got the Honeywell Pentax from Fengwei! Fengwei is a nice chap, I have got some nice items from him too. Yes, it's a nice collectors' piece at a bargain price... I was looking at it too, considering whether to get it for personal collection (but I've gone digital :)). If there is such thing as a digital back for the camera, I will grab it too. Congrats!

Thanks... Good stuff at good price. I saw it on Saturday morning, SMS'ed him immediately and told him I wanted it irregardless whether it was working or not. :) I am really really very happy with this purchase. Yes, Feng Wei is a nice guy.

I also got 2 RF from fellow CS'er 1 x Yashica MG-1 & 1 x Olympus SP at $40 each. No bargain, just grab...

Although The Yashica not in very good condition, I can only get shuttle speed working at 1/30 & 1/500 without battries. Ran a roll of B&W, took it to Ikea cafe and shot some kids... results on a PAN400 is still presentable. :) Still got a little "Bokeh" somemore... Blame it on my processing for the grainy feeling....

It's definitly a lot fun shooting with cheap cameras....

I'm looking for a cheapo M42 lens to go along with this Pentax beauty... Hope will find 1 in Cash Converter.

How much space do you have in your storage anyway... o_O!

Have a Canon manual SLR you want to sell off? ;)

I see, you got the Olympus 35 SP from a very nice gentleman (trixd7604). Nice camera, featured in Cameraquest... http://www.cameraquest.com/olysp.htm

I got 2 old M42 lenses from the same kind gentleman at a very good price too... you won't believe it if I tell you the total cost of the 2 lenses (Chinon 55mm/f1.7 and Mamiya 50mm/f2)... let's just say it's about the cost of 2 family meals at KFC ;)

If you really want these M42 lenses, I don't mind selling them to you (at same price as he sold me, I'm not profitting from them), as I was keeping them for spare parts to mod other lenses. The mechanics are still good, though I can see some fungus on the optics. The Mamiya looks cleaner. No caps on both lenses, so you have to look for your own.

Yes, you are right. I got the SP from trixd7604. He's a nice guy and we spent half an hour talking about cameras in my car on a rainy day.... sounds romantic eh? hahahahaha....

I will take your 2 x M42 lens if you are willing to let go. PM you my mobile.

Thanks Alvin!

Enjoy your SLR Chiff! I must say all the mounts are confusing. I'll learn as I go along I guess.

Hi alternatve,
Here are some wonderful links to learn about different mounts (good to know the measurements especially if you are a handyman type who like to modify stuff)...

Thanks alvin! Am going to get my first SLR in a few days. Thanks for all your help!

Hello, I'm back again. After much discussion, I have purchased a Minolta X-700 with it's kit lens and a 28-80mm zoom lens. Here are some sample pictures

One of my test shots.

While playing pool with my friends.

This two are the better of the entire roll I shot. The majority of the shots were either blurred, underexposed or slightly underexposed. I guess I still have a long way to go before I can take excellent shots.

Very good for a virgin roll on a new camera!

Keep it up!

those of us who started photog in the days of film, had no choice. but with digital cameras, its actually faster to practise and master ur basics on a digicam - that way u get instant feedback. will save u $$$ on film processing tool

What's the reason for the blurring for the second picture? I had a solid support (The pool table) and lighting was pretty good. I also focused the best I could.

Sorry to spoil it but if u want to ask for comment, how to improve ur photo, please post the photos in suitable sub forum like critique . Shoot with SLR so also not belong to RF or compact also.

I understand. My original aim was to have a sense of completeness to this thread, as I've graduated from thinking of getting a camera of my own, to being advised about the different makes and models, to getting a camera and finally now posting the finished product. ;)

Since you have the camera now, time to read up about photography :) Aperture, Shutter Speed, Exposure ... loads of info on the web. That should answer your questions ...

I got a good and reliable Canon SLR with full manual controls. I has the option to go fully auto if u r tired of manual focus and exposure setting. I let go to u for $380 if i am keen.

So if there's a working meter, you don't have to touch the controls save for the shutter release button? The meter will overide the controls? Cool... Thanks for sharing this with me.

My first ever training camera is my durable and reliable Asahi pentax K1000! All I have is a 50mm and it is all it takes to teach me all the basic of photography, and the camera's potential just don't stops there! And it is relatively cheap and could be easily maintained! (Fully mechanical and totally manual controlled, and all it needs is a watch batt to power the light meter) Viewfinder is simple with only a needle light meter and even being the only electronic mechanism, it still uses a mechanical switch for on/off, which is the lens cap! How basic can this camera gets?

Well, you could get a Leica 2 or 3 rangefinder. It's bottom loading, because there was no such thing as a swing back in those days. There isn't a advance lever, only a knob. No metering of any sort. No combined viewfinder. (You have to focus with one and compose with the other) You have to cut a Long Film leader to load this camera as well.

But I think it's damn sexy to look at, hold and use. ;)
