Newbie Starting film

I just completed shooting my first roll of film recently and went to pick up the results today.

Have to say I really like what I see.At least got feeling for me

I have been shooting on digital for the past 1 year on my d90 and now d700. Suddenly I feel like spending more time on film instead of big bodies...

Anybody in this shoes before? :bsmilie:

Hi, welcome to using film. You may like to identify the type of film you used, the model as well :)

Black and white silver halide negative?
B&W C41 negative?
Colour C41 negative?
Colour E6 Slides?

And yes, the feeling is different :)

Haha, im in your shoes too! I got a d90 now, but i want to get a nice RF, maybe a bessa r2m to start film. So after my O's, hopefully i can save up to get one! Can't wait!!!

So you feel hot? cold?

Hi there! I was in your shoes about a yr back. Sold all my digital stuff and went to film. I've never looked back since!

hihi same but i didnt sell my digital stuffs..

but now selling off my r2a trying to fund for the darkside

I got a D90 for a month and got sick of it because it wasn't just quite right. It was a good camera. I did not mind the weight and I bought it everwhere, and it would be either in my hand or in my unpadded bag.

But something about the streets is calling me, and I need a camera that will suit my purpose and become an extension of me. The D90, does not do that. The Crop sensor (crop factor) and professional look from the camera (intimidates) are the two big negatives here.

I then got my Yashica MG-1 serviced and started to shoot film. The first time I looked at those negatives, it was just pure joy. From that, I knew that I had to sell my D90.

Wanted a Leica at first, but didn't have the money for a nice M6. So instead, I got the R2A with the 50mm f1.5, a great combination, never regretted it. Soon I started developing my own film, scanning them, filing them, those silver halides are just wonderful to look at. Used it for 15+ rolls before I sold it again for a beaten M4-2. The Leica feeling is definitely different from a Voigtlander; even with my trash-like and beaten up M4-2, it feels solid compared to my Voigtlander (it doesn't feel as reliable due to age though)

Should've known to get a Leica in the first place.
Using a M6 TTL now, alongside with a 35mm lens.

Thanks for all the comments bro!

haha these terms sound chim leh... just used the Fujicolour Superia 200. Got it developed at the shop. May have space constraint at home. so self develop may be tough. Using a olympus 35 RC now.

Still have a Yashica Electro 35, a Nikon FG and my dad's Shanghai brand medium format..

a friend keeps telling me to get a used M6, very different feel. such a heavy investment with the lens leh... maybe later... :embrass:

Like falling in Love for the first time again?

I did think of selling my D700 and getting a smaller body. and then also shoot film.

Baby is coming up next yr... i also dunno how often i can shoot with it... and also to bring it out with all the milk powders... haha!

Hi Yoricko.

Currently I'm using D300 and feel the same way on Street Photograpy, i wish i can get advice from you or all the masters here in RF community, on what should i do for start (I never use RF before)? should i spend sometimes to readup on RF before jump into it (hopefully i can join RF.SG meetup to try the RF Camera from all the masters here ). I'm very ithcy to start and buy 2nd hand RF camera from the B&S but budget really constraint me :(

TS: Sorry, I'm not trying to Hijack this thread

Thanks in advance, Alberto

I am also considering to shoot film, as i have been tired of the digital look, and so i recently sold all my Nikon bodies and lenses to either get a Leica or Bessa.
But i am wondering whether it is worth getting the Leica M8 since i have read many reviews about how it looks like digital film, with sharp, rich colours. The upside of the M8 is that i don't have to spend on film, processing and scanning time. It is also the only digital RF. The downside is it is the price of one is on the high side although it is possible to get one for 3K+ second hand.

After visiting this site, i was convinced to get an M8, but like to know your views :)

Come for the RF.SG meetup this Sat & try out all the RF cameras before deciding.

Advice from the guys would be much faster crash course than reading a book ;)

I'm not sure about the rest of the guys but for me, the M8 doesnt even come close to film feel if that is what you are looking for.

Its how you post process to achieve the film feel, not raw from the M8.

If you really are sick of digital, you shouldnt get the M8 but try the M6 or M7

the post process is to further process the images shot from film or from digital?

for ppl like me, if i have a constraint getting it done at home, is the image quality noticeable getting it done in the shop and self develop/process?

was refering to the M8 pics, post process to make it more "film" like.

For processing of film on C41 & E6, not too sure, I havent done it before, gotta ask our resident guru zk-dk

for B&W, quality is very noticeable when you do it yourself. Self scanning also makes a big diff compared to the low res lab scan.

Hi RWC,

I'd love to come, I'm just so affraid that i'll be "poisoned" by the RF community much faster.

Cheers bro.

Wouldnt la, take your vaccine ;)

Honestly, coming down to try the camears is alot much better than reading a dozen books.

Film has a defining 'kick'. Its the raw feeling that you get, which digital cannot provide. (Maybe after lots of processing, yes.)

I started with film as my base and learning curve, ''upgraded' to digital, but now, I have found my joy in film again. I never sold my film stuff, it was a 'cooling off' period that I had that made me find the joy of film.

All I can say is -

Go and buy a stack of film. :bsmilie:.

I started shooting B&W film recently. There's definitely a difference between self processed & self scanned film with those done at the shops. For once, I've to say DIY is clearly better.

Where is the RF meeting held and what time on Saturday? Is it every Saturday.
When you say that you can get to try the cameras, do you mean the member's cameras?
That would be great to go, perhaps i can get some good advice.
I have just tried the M8 and found that it has the digital feel and the photo that appears on the LCD is so-so.
Also when you zoom, it is initially pixalated, it takes a while to appear - i have only seen this in the Sony Cybershot 15 yrs ago!
So, looks like i'm back on track with film based equipment...Leica or Bessa....
What is a good scanner for film?
