Are you sure this is correct? If your lens is 18mm, on a camera like the 350D the effective FOV with 1.5x crop factor would be around 27mm, therefore the minimum shutter speed is 1/27 right?

doesnt matter. hand held speeds are just generally 1/60-1/100. u wont wanna risk with a 1/30 and below... just personal preference. cause remember, while u minimize handheld speed, ur getting subject blur

Some people account for the multiplier, so do not. Most of the time I do not and I get ok results. It is not really an exact science, and depends on the person. Some people has very stable hands, some are shaky as hell.

The guide about shutter speed to distance is just a guide. Experience and pratice will help make better judgement. The hand is yours and you cannot compare it with others. Technique will help you stable you hand more to a certain extend. Certain fast moving object can be shot by panning and some low light shots work better with flash, high ISO or tripod are all depending.

Alternative, you can go gym and try pratice weight lifting with a egg on a spoon on the other hand to train for USPH (Ultra stable panning hand).
