Can i ask those owners of the new Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 HSM, is the zoom right especially tight? Found it really tight when i was trying it at the shop and thus putting the purchase on hold as i'm planning to use it for DSLR video. Does it suffer from zoom creep as there is no lock as well?

Been trying a couple of the Canon L and it seems that some are really not up to the L quality while some are good. So thinking of this Sigma if it is worthy competitor for me to forgo the L? :think:

I just finished reading thru the reviews at fengniao for the lens. Very comprehensive and detailed test reports.

Summary of the results (for those who are lazy to read all 3 reports)
Sony Carl Zeiss > Sigma / Nikon > Canon

The Sigma 24-70 f2.8 is tested to be quite abit better than the Canon version. It is on par with the Nikon, but loses out to Carl Zeiss. However, the reviewer mentioned that for the price of the Sigma, he feels that this is a very high quality lens.

Ive read another review site and the results are the same.

Canon < Sigma/Nikon (both on par) < Sony (Carl Zeiss)

just bought the sigma 24-70 2.8 if ex hsm, it feels good, light and short lens. The flare control is superb, almost zero flaring. Full time manual is also a plus, very precise focusing and it's cheaper than canon. The only difference is that canon is weather sealed, other than that it's better in terms of optical quality. This is Definately better than the the 24-70L

IMO, to make a good judgment on how sharp a lens is, you got to see it cropped at 100%, especially at the eyes. Web-sized pictures could only be indicative and not a good indicator of sharpness.

while i agree with you, the resolution of most cameras these days exceed the general printing purposes of the average photographers these days.

in any case, the sigma 24-70 HSM is as sharp as sharp gets these days. i doubt you find it deficient in any sense.

I was torn btw which one to get and when I asked the shop if the differences, he replied saying if you already have the budget for 24-70 then dunnit to think any further.

I think what he said does make sense. :think:

1. Resale value retention is higher.
2. Sharp or not is very subjective. Correct technique and settings can get sharp images as well.
