New Canon 100mm f2.8L IS USM

100mm f2.8L IS USM

It's got the "L" tag and it's too expensive. My 100/2.8 produces the best images of any lens I've used, better than all the L's including the 200/2.8L. The resolution of this lens is outstanding. If I throw the 100 on my camera and shoot a pile of rubbish, I can see every grain of dust and dirt, but it would look like a beautiful work of art.

Yes the L and IS would be nice but I'll pass for now. It's too costly.

Ask the Nikon guys about their 105 macro VR, maybe they can give more info on the IS ability on macro lens
f/2 macro would be nice, but I reckon it will be even more expensive and large, maybe the size of a 100 f/1.4 if such thing exist

To me, paying another $700 for the HIS for the 100mm f2.8 macro is not justifiable. I shoot macro with tripod and live view most of the time. For walk around casual macro like shooting flowers, any good manual lens will do. When the wind blows, you can throw HIS out of the window. If I buy this lens, it will be for action shots like shooting my grandson at a distance. For this, I would prefer the current 100mm f2 which is about 1/3 rd the price.

I might consider it if I didn't already have 100mm F/2.8 USM Macro. But since I already have the 100mm F/2.8 USM Macro, i would rather prefer a longer focal length macro lengths as an upgrade instead of this new 100mm L lens.

Being released with the 7D, I have a hunch this 100L is mainly targetted at APS-C as it would give them a focal length of 160mm. HIS would be more useful. Having said that, it also look appealing for someone like me whom has been wanting to get a 85f1.8 and 135L. Maybe I'll settle on this lens instead. It is like a 3-in-1.

What I am waiting for is to verify that macro lens have been calibrated for macro work/close focusing. How good will the 100L be for portrait or street photography.

The larger 67mm front element, compared to 58mm will mean that it will gather more light/less vignette for FF.

The 9 blade aperture improvement over the 8 blade shows maybe an even nicer bokeh

15 elements in 12 groups shows a overhaul of the lens arrangement over the older 12 elements in 8 group. Note that despite of having more lens element, bigger barrel diameter, metal construction with seal, HIS electronics, etc. The 100L weighs only 25g more than the 100macro. Thinner glass or lighter plastics used??? More glass elements = more complex light manipulation??? (I am just speculating on this one). The 135L uses 10elements in 8 groups.

So this 100L does give mixed signal about its identity.

So far, this is the only lens that Canon has introduced in the last few years that managed to pique my interest.

Cheers,

but so many ppl are dumping their macro now...either they gave up on the lens or all are gunning the new 100 macro L..i was a bit hype up for awhile...now i rationalise...i think the norm one is gd enough..save some bucks..atleast 700-800bucks not even including lost of selling

I'll probably wait for release of longer focal length (150mm?, 180mm). There is nothing to complain about the older 100mm other than no focus limiter at 0.3-0.4m (macro rage).

hmmm... can fit a 1.4x / 2x extender on the 100mm/2.8?

I was initially quite excited by the news of this 100mm f2.8 L macro lens:lovegrin:
But after some rational thinking basing on the differences(improvement it offers and my level of satisfaction with the current 100mm f2.8macro ), also the amount of macro that I do,the excitement kind of cooled down somewhat.

Absolutely yes. I don't like it because I have problems with hand-holding the lens. Now, with HIS, it's a different story though. :bsmilie:

Canon Japan is having a hand on experience for EOS 7D and EF100mm F2.8L Marco in various prefectures in Japan.

that's quite steep..almost like the 180L....now this is a motivating factor for me to love my non-L macro lens

ya....Me too... I just keep my current 100mm.....

According to Canon, the new EF 100mm f2.8L IS is to supplement, not a replacement for the current EF 100mm f2.8.

As such, EF 100mm f2.8 will still be in production.

Canon lenses in Japan are more expensive (maybe JDM :) ). Sin should be ~1.3k

To me, it is good enough to replace 85f1.8, 100macro and 135L :). Of course Canon will say it is supplement.

Maybe its time to get the 180mmL :bsmilie:
