Need Help with tripod.....

Hi,
I recently brought a Canon 300D, and now i want to get a good tripod.
But i am very confused with what to look for in a tripod is it the Height, Weight, price, brand or features etc.... :dunno:

Can Someone recommend me a good tripod and tell me i how much should i spend on it??
Is it cheaper to buy a 2nd hand tripod from yahoo auctions or ebay?? :think:
Is anyone here selling a tripod??

if u want a solid one , it will be around $200..... but if u not into those big zoom lens, just get a slik 9000 will do....cost around $65 -$75.... i am using one...for three years and still in good condition.

Go to a shop and take a look first , check the prices too...got problem? maybe if one day we are both free can go down to PP to see some stuffs...i need to get something too....PM me ...

What is your definition of "good tripod"?
Some ppl prefer a heavy tripod for strong support.
Some ppl prefer a light tripod for easy to carry.
Some popular tripods are Slik 9000 or Manfrotto 190. You can go to Cathay Photo to see see look look first. They should have many different ones on display, priced from <$100 to a few hundred $. Good tripod ballhead are extra cost.

I think Adam's hit the nail on the head with this one. Your height and the weight of equipment is the first thing you should take into consideration.

At the same time, do take into account any possible upgrades you may get down the road (Tokina 80-200mm lens alone is about 1.2kg!)

I believe a basic setup that's good for future use will cost about $300+ brand new, with a 6kg load capacity on the head and tripod legs. I'm using a Manfrotto 055CL + Giottos MH-1000-200 combo that takes my medium format camera just as well.

Thanks guys for the info. I think i will go down to cathay one day and look out for slik 9000 for now. Currently i only have a 300D kit, will be getting new lens in the future, no$$ now. So i guess Slik 9000 shld be enuff for my requirements. I will be going to australia in may, so i need a light one too. Is slik 9000 considered light? or heavy??

SLIK 9000, max load of tripod is 2040 grams.

300D is 645g (source: Dpreview)
depending on ur len's weight.....

For Reference:
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di is already 510g
Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 HSM is 1270g

so a 300D w/ 70-200mm sigma is 1270+645 = 1,915 grams

Nearly exceeding the Load limit of the U9000 , not even counting items like Vertical Grip with Spare Battery and the Possible Addition of a 550EX Flash with 4 'AA' Batteries.


If u use it with 300D and Kit Lense w/o Flash for landscapes, the setup is pretty okay, but for future heavier lens it might not be enough.

If u dont want to waste time scouting for info on the web.

Mount the heaviest lens on ur camera, with vertical grip and a flash....
Weigh it.

Taking that as the MAXIMUM possible weight ur setup will be.

Pop by Cathay Photo's tripod store and speak to one of the salesman there, stating the tripod shld be able to handle the weight u had weighed of your equipment.

(Bare in mind, the load of the tripod in not including the tripod head, so u need some leeway to inculde the weight of the tripod head u decide to choose)

Check out the websites of Manfrotto and SLIK for starters... Important considerations are WEIGHT of tripod (not load), The MAX LOAD of tripod, MAX Height of tripod (w/ and w/o Center column), Number of Leg Sections (3 or 4) [More sections tend to fold shorter but max height extended seems lower]
