That's what I'm using now. The 18-135 rocks as a walkabout lens, esepcially when u cover events =)

I guess the next step up for me will be 18-200VR

Bro, I think you should skip the 18-200VR. In terms of optics, it's only a minor improvement, and the premium you're paying is, IMHO, not worth it. You're getting 65mm in focal length, VR, and a very minor improvement in optics.

Perhaps... you are right =)

Need to test it further to see if i need it =)

Besides, I'm happy with my current setup

I don't know if you would consider this an upgrade, but since you already have a tele to cover you up to 300mm, you could consider getting the 18-70mm DX. Although there's less reach, it's one of Nikon's best kit lenses. You can still keep the 18-135 for travel.

Truez but I'm kinda prefer travelling light =) Less lens, less stuff the better =)

But thanx for your comments!

Btw.. I'm using D80 now with the following:

Tamron 17-50
Nikon 50mm 1.8f
Nikon 18-135
Nikon 70-300VR

The tamrom always find itself fixed on my camera instead of my 18-135 now =P

Tamron 17-50

Your set up is pretty good. With that set up I would stick to it quite a fair bit. Maybe just get a flash if you shoot indoor events a lot.

Hey Prataz, I am using the D80 and its Kit Lens too. Thinking of getting the 70-300VR like you, how much did it cost you?

Hihi! I have a SB600 =)

For the 70-300VR, I got it expensive... Bought it at a dodgey shops at lucky plaza, stating it's going to close down.. then give me a good price but end up i paid more coz of GST, Filter and other adhoc charges... #@%^#@!%#@!%#@%

So the morale of the story.. don't buy from dodugey shops! Always buy from the reputable ones like:

CP, AP, MS Color, TCW, John's, Lords etc.

Email them for a quote so that its' black and white if possible =)

I see, thank you for your valuable advice.
I am looking into SpeedLight SB800 and more cool lenses.
But 1st, let me get my skills right.
Thanks again. :)

You can try getting the 50mm 1.8f

it has very nice bokeh and it's not heavy on the wallet.. less then 200 and always available at BnS

Good for training composing =)

Good luck on shooting more great shoots!

Right. Thanks again! :)
So the 50mm 1.8f is a Manual lens huh?

Wah... 17-55 wor =)

How's the 17-55 lens?

Once I got it, I have been putting the 18-55mm lens aside. So far, I have sold only 1 lens that I regretted buying, my previous 85mm f/1.4. I am using 17-55 f2.8, 105 2.8 and 50mm f1.8 pretty frequent...:D

i noe wat you mean... With my Tamrom 17-50 2.8f I had being neglecting my 18-135 =)

The only time I use the 18-135 is when I go and shoot events and need the extra zoom.. esle it's 17-50 and my 50mm for most of my shots nowadays

so far on the comments are on zoom lens right? any comments on marco lens?

is there such thing as zoom and marco lens?

Yes. There are many zooms which has some limited 'macro' capabilities but this one below is a bonafide macro zoom.

can sigma or tamron lens be mount onto D40??

D40 purely only AFS? can AF-D?

D40 can only use the following type of lenses.

Nikon AFS lens

Sigma HSM lens

Other lens will be full manual focusing, which is a pain in the ass especially during events etc.

Even the most patience of models or ppl will go #@%@#% at you when you try to focus the lens properly =/

So your only options for auto-focusing lenses are

Prime lens: Sigma 30mm 1.4f (Almost similar to 50mm on film) @$725 - $750
2.8f 17-55 lens: Nikon 17-55 2.8f AFS $2150
and the list goes on =)

i see... so only nikkor AFS or sigma HSM...

lucky i prefer sigma then tamron

You can still use the other AF lenses, but you'd have to manually focus them, that's the only difference.

manually focus very tedious!!! and if i zoom further rather... kinda hard to get the results.
