Need advise for CF card

any brand of card reader to recommend? there's so many of them out there not sure which one is good, fast and reliable.

Just curious... SD cards rated at 60 mb/s has the same speed as CF cards rated at 60mb/s then? Because now that my camera can take both, I'm wondering if I should consider utilizing both.

Technically yes, but the advertised speed is usually the read speed. The write speed are usually fine printed somewhere on the box or website.

As for reader, good readers will allow you to download images to your computer faster. That's all. But it all contributes to the overall card speed experience. :)

this one i totally agree. last time use the under $20 usb2, take ages to download to computer, now using usb3 it is so much faster

can try out transcend usb3, think sold at tk for about 30+, may be the cheapest around. i am using it, so far very satisfy with the speed.

Many are pro Sandisk here..for me..I'm a Kingston User..I have 1 16GB 133X and 1 16GB 266X..similarly I'm also using a 50D..I also have a Sandisk Ultra II that I keep as spare..been using the 2 Kingston cards for a year already and both have served me very well..I shoot in RAW 90% of the time so it's about 700 shots per 16GB card..I don't usually shoot in high speed burst but when I do the 133X and 266X gives me about 14-17 shots in a row before running out of buffer..so to me that's acceptable..most of the time my flash can't recycle fast enough or accurately after 10 shots..I've shot full day events covering about 1000 shots with no misfortune on the part of the CF cards..

I'm very sure the Sandisk are good but to me the Kingston are just as good for bodies like 40D/50D/7D/5D/5Dii for 20% cheaper..i guess with many other mass produced items you're bound to get some failing items..my friend's Sandisk ExtremePro failed on him one time and he had to borrow my spare card..so no such thing as 100% won't fail..

My take is unless you going pro body..any card is ok i guess..btw I bought my Kingston 266X at $38..

Would love to have USB 3.0 readers but iMac only has 2.0 slots!!!

Among my Kingston, Sanddisk and transcend, all have served well over the years except my most expensive Sanddisk extreme iii- keep giving errors during video and some error. I remember Sanddisk has lifetime warranty but I can't claim it as receipt ink has vaporized... So much for paying $$$ for Sanddisk. Bottom line is if u're rich go for the best. If budget constrained, go for cheap and popular one like transcend and Kingston. U can buy the most expensive and it'll still die on u, like my Sanddisk extreme iii ...

Many are pro Sandisk here..

it is not pro to a particular brand, u can read the reviews from buyers. compare to others, sandisk has lower rate of failure and consistency of speed performance. when memory capacity is smaller, it is easy to do more check before leaving factory but when it is large capacity like now, doing more check will result in more time which equate to cost. also some brand uses low tier memory for their card which will be more prone to failure in longer term.

I know la..haha! Nothing against Sandisk or anything..I'm sure they are very good..most of them may not fail at all throughout their lifespan but to the one user who paid $100 for his and it fails..Sandisk sucks..heh heh!

I'm more an advocate of buying what you need..buying the best or most expensive everytime doesn't really mean it'll improve your current equipment..

I once worked in a shop that sells card reader...so I tested a whole bunch of them...

USB2.0 compliant does not mean it really is usb 2.0 speed, just mean plug into usb 2.0 port it will work. Some are still the usb1.1 which transfer data at 1mb/s rate. Some USB2.0 really can hit near 30mb/s rate.

Same thing for USB3.0 card readers. May or may not get the full speed.

In my limited testing, some crappier ones had very weak pins, or maybe just poor guide in the card slot. The sandisk reader is not bad.

Yup that's absolutely right.

However, we won't go wrong with the SanDisk and Lexar readers that I mentioned above. Tried them personally and they do offer very decent speed :)

I am using the kingston 3.0 reader. Very good improvement over the sony 2.0 one i had. No regrets. Need faster cards now.

Just my personal opinion, don't use Kingston. I've had a Kingston card on me that gave me 50% corrupted shots (meaning half my shots couldn't be read when downloading). Minimum, use sandisk. They're cards aren't that expensive and these cards are reliable enough.

On the other hand, if you have some cash to burn and are likely to shoot alot of photos and for a long time, I suggest Lexar. They're the ultimate in reliability. Price wise, they're of course higher than sandisk and kingston but there's good reason for that price.

All in all, if you really need a new card soon, just buy sandisk. Don't go for any other brand. Later on, when you have the time, then look for a lexar if you're keen on it.

Speed wise, you don't really feel it when it's in your camera so anything would do. It's only when you download do you feel the difference in the card speed.

For Sandisk, I'd recommend the following depending on your budget:

Cheap and Usable: Sandisk Ultra. Cheap and works fine in-camera. Downloading is a little slow, especially if you want a 16GB card

Not-so-cheap but good: Sandisk Extreme. This comes in extreme 3 or extreme 4. Take your pick. Really fast downloading speeds but also not cheap.

Hope this helps!

I think san disk now hv only extreme n extreme pro....
