I was in the similar situation b4 but decide to keep my 24-85, reasons are:

1. 85mm/4.5 and 135mm/5.6 is not a big difference.
2. IS is only useful when you are shooting with slow film/ISO can IS cannot stop
motion. IS on 28-135 is 1st generation IS. 2nd generation IS already out. You can always use a monopod to gain the extra 2-3 stops.
3. Optically not much difference between 24-85 and 28-135.
4. 24-85 is lighter, smaller, easier to handle.
5. The extra 4mm at the wide end is valuable. Just go and borrow a 28-135 and compare it at the wide end.

If you want to experience with a telephoto zoom, get a 2nd hand 80-200 4.5-5.6 super-light-weight pocket rocket at around SGD100 and try the range out first. You can always sell it off and buy the more expenstive 70-200 later.

this i have to agreed...the AF on 24-85 USM is much faster compared to a 28-135 IS USM....
the 4mm diff means a lot especially on a DSLR....
price is another factor... for a used 24-85 is around 350-450... wherelese a 28-135 is 600-750.... a bit too ex....

Once u have a zoom that starts with 24mm ... u will never be sastisfied with something that starts at 28mm .. trust me !!!

yup. decided to keep this 24-85 USM. Really like its AF speed :)
hmm... now going to hunt for a 70-300 tele/macro lens... ;)

Thanks and appreciate you all advise.

None of the 70-300 zoom is good enough IMO (except the new DO IS which is too ex), save your money to buy 70-200 f4L + Tamron 1.4x lah .. 2nd hand goes for about 1k SGD, can MO from Adorama also ..

Your 24-85 filter size is 67mm, 70-200 f4L also 67mm ... perfect match

I have the 28-135, it's an excellent lens. very fast also. had the 24-85. it was nice. but really, for a lens to use especially nighttime ad hoc shoots on the streets and indoors, nothing beats the 28-135mm in terms of price performance. you will not need the lens to start at 24, cos you will wants it to end at 135, not 85. for wide angles, you'll need the 17-40. thats not an option... hah. so just my opinion as i have come this way before.

bte, where is adorama? looking to get the 70-200. :D

no budget for the 70-200 f/4L lah... at the meantime to satisfy my icthy heart, thinking to go for a decent 70-300 APO macro2 lor :)

i rather go for the 70-300 APO Macro2 coz the aperature lower....

Whether you need 24-28mm will depend on what you shoot and your style. IMO, 24-28mm is very important for landscape work and indoor shots. I shoot usually during backpacking at exotic places so weight/size is important to me. 24-85 lighter and smaller than 28-135. For portraits, I prefer fast prime (either 85/1.8, 100/2, 135/2). ST_sg, if you cannot afford 70-200 f4L, buy a fast prime e.g. 100 f2 or 135 f2.8 or Tamron 90/2.8. The cost will be around 500SGD.

rainman letting go of one! haha, from another discussion... ;)

Anyway, where can I find this Sigma lens? Does CP or TCW sell it?

Using the 28-135 as my primary lens so far and I'm very satisfied with it for covering events and also leisure phototaking. Gives me very sharp pics. Hrm, about all these discussion about the AF of the 24-85 n the 28-135... Does it really make such a big difference if we're not a professional photographer, or if not we're not in situations that demand that faster AF. (how many mili-seconds??) Everyone has their own preference. I prefer to go with ThomT's thought of getting a lens with good range. Covered hundreds of events and time doesn't allow me to change lens frequently.

what lens u want all depends on what situations u find urself most often in.

If the 70-200L is out of reach..you might want to consider a second hand EF 80-200L. You get F2.8 and it is also much more sharper than all 3 of the 70-200 L lenses. The only problem is that, it's somewhat slow when it comes to focusing as it uses the old AFD...and also it does not support FTM.. :embrass:
