is $9k worth more to you than the peaace and stability you have enjoyed for the past years?
well... we serve knowing that this is what we have to do for our nation... this 9k is definitely not what we did if for... however our garment did say this is to differentiate us to those who need not serve... the benefit of being a true citizen... then the question is this 9k really significant to those who serve ? anyway its better than nothing... its GE so 9k sounds pretty but its really not significant to me at least...

The peace and stability is definately worth more than $9K. However, the issue here is not the amount given, it is about equal treatment.
In the event of war / conflict, I am sure all the old soldiers will be called back to protect and serve, even though we are no longer "active".
Now, shouldn't the old soldiers also be entitled to a token amount too ? It is the thought that counts

After reading the details, it seems I will not be happy afterall! What an anti-climax .....
I thought a better option would be to increase basic pay of current NSFs. They can decide to spend it, save for education or business start up, even get a motorbike to commute. For the older soldiers (including ALL that have served), free medical for class c wards, option to select class c if ex soldier don't meet the means testing. I feel that if an individual is wiling to risk his life, then the state is obligated to care for his well being. A ns man insurance paid for the state can cover this, so service injuries can be covered.

It would smarter and fairer for the PM to give out a smaller amount of cash/CPF award to ALL who had served in NS rather than alienating the older and senior soldiers.
This alienated group may even repay his kindness by not voting for him this coming GE !

one bowl of noodles used to cost 25¢ in the past, but $2.50 now. it's only normal that allowances go up. cannot compare the allowance in the past to the allowance given today.
PS: note the word allowance, not pay.

LOL... notice how something hasn't popped in the news for a while... especially this couple of years?
Hint: It's probably going to be 9% the next time round.

$9k does not make up for anything. Its what? 1 term uni school fees?
Come out from army;
GF snatched away while in camp (psychological loss);
Potential employers tell me I don't have experience (wrt FT) (opportunity loss);
Start as fresh grad while same aged foreign peers already almost done or starting post grad/honors (metal stress/ psychological loss)
If can sue like in the US, I think its worth few hundred thousand :bsmilie:
