My Videos - Learng and Making Them

Teachers Paintball Challenge 2012 - Cedar Primary School

[youtubehd]8AdssDhlzDU[/youtubehd]

Managed to get an opportunity to video shoot this event. Was trying to help my friend to spice his event up. Nothing spectacular about this video.

Tokina 70-300mm Lens
- Used my dad's Tokina lens. MAN!! I love this lens. It really does bring the action closer to you.
- The set back that I dun really like this lens is the focus ring. I find it is kinda hard to focus in and out. Compared to my other lenses, they are pretty smooth and easy.

Twixtor
- I played around with Twixtor. Slow it down to 10% but I cannot take it the warping. I dun know why it is warping.
- Is it because not enough frame rate ? Is it because of the shutter speed that when I do slow mo, it is warping and the motion blur causing the warping?
- Maybe next time, I will try to shoot at higher shutter speed and twixtor it and see what results can I get.

Keep It Coming
- It has been a while since I video shoot paintball outing or event. I was totally lost. It took me 2 games to get the groove back.
- I failed to understand that this tournament was a hopper style meaning, each player only has about 100 balls to shoot and capture the flag to win the game. If it is like a real tournament, all players would be bring at least 800-1000 balls each. I, myself, will bring in at least 1200 balls per game. So the intensity was not the same. I decided to focus my shots of players running, creeping instead of fire-fights, which I expected.
- I failed to understand that 90% of the teachers are playing paintball for the first time. So you cannot expect all the dives, slides, killer moves and etc.
- It took me 2 hours and one of the tournament paintball player to tell me "Bro, what do you expect? This is not a real tournament. This is rookies tournament lah" to realise the feel of the whole tournament. So, I guess, when we go out to video shoot, we need to understand and able to tell what kind of feel or what to expect. If not, you would not do any justice to yourself.

Question
- Is it true that we can't take pictures or video someone in army uniform for any other purposes ? I was told before that it cannot be taken. So I had a hard time video shoot the teachers as 70% are wearing the army uniform.

So, if there are any teachers out here, look out for this Paintball Challenge next year. I heard the organizor is trying to add cash prizes for next year.

You should get into the game and shoot as well :bsmilie:

Sgdevilzz>>> Not this one. Meant for teachers. I just played Singapore Paintball Series 2012 Leg 2 on the 6/7 October.

This is me playing with TEC Mini DV mount on my mask. Lower down the volume. You will hear me shouting A LOT! >>> E-marker Day Game 2 - YouTube

eleveninth>>> Hell Yeah!!! Initially I was more incline to Tachyon HD because of its size and its direction of shooting point. Since the GoPro 3 announced, I am in awe with the specs. Still, I need to explore and experiment with DSLR. Thanks Bro.

u tired / using magic lantern yet?

eleveninth>>> Not yet Bro. I dare not just yet. Scared it might trip my camera program. Maybe once I am prepared to "lose" camera, then I will try.

very unlikely to happen man.

Just be careful of the editions. Black edition is kicking ass. The rest are normal specs with improved optics and performance :)

Sgdevilzz>>> Oh Yes! BLACK!! BLACK!!

eleveninth>>> Will go and check it out man. Going to trust you on this.

My first time shooting in a studio. Overall, I love shooting in a controlled environment. Relaxing and stress free. Still, I do have my shortcomings.

Basically, this video, is more like my gift to my friends. They are getting married. Thought of doing an announcement video for them. My idea was for them to share their pet peeves about each other with the people who are going to watch it.

What I really like :-

1. Controlled Environment
- Compared to my previous video projects, this time around, I did not meddle my settings too much just to ensure a good recording composition. Lock that ISO down, Lock that Exposure down, Lock that Focus. You are all good to go.

2. Constant Lighting
- It was heaven to have that constant lighting. Again, it made the shooting experience very calm and easy.

What I do not really like :-

1. Room Noise
- What I did was to set my in-camera recording level to 14 clicks from the left. At this recording level, it starts to pick up some signal. I believe it was the “sweet-spot” for that studio.
- I was surprised to find out that the recording volume was too soft and it picked up the room noise, which is terrible. Still, it was better than my previous video project I did the last time , Character Study. I believe I execute the audio recording not that well. I guess to me back to reading and exploring again.

2. Disturbance
- The studio was situated next to another company office. Apparently, throughout the shoot, they were doing some works. The knocking sound came intermittently. Shooting had to be stopped. This is where we wasted shooting time. Overall, the shooting pace was good.

3. Photo Lighting
- Oh man. I did not know that photo lighting was able to produce this buzzing sound. I do not know what is it. I suspect that every time the bulb gets “cold”, it will warmed up the bulb. By doing so, the lighting is producing buzzing sound. You are able to hear it (use headphone). In the video, at 05:17, with the buzzing sound and at 05:21, without the buzzing sound. You will get what I mean.

Editing

What I did in post to tackle the room noise.
- I use Denoiser where I set the reduction to -20Hz. Open up the custom setup. Mark in and mark out in your clip where your subject is not talking. Set the settings for the Denoiser and it will denoise the room noise.
- I use Dehummer where I set the reduction to 30Hz and select 16 bit. Open up the custom setup and select the setting mentioned.
- I use EQ. This is where I mid2 level to the area where it will wiped out the hissing noise. I set it -15Hz. For this audio effect, you need to open the custom setup. Adjust the mid2 level using the graph provided.
- Due to the soft audio, I increase the audio gain by 20Hz. I increase the volume to 6db.
- Throughout this editing, I set my headphone level at about 30%. My take on this, I do not want to blow up the volume for the final video when being played via the TV. My first trial, I had to increase my TV volume to 65% in order to be able to hear them talking. Using the method mentioned, the video playback via TV, the volume now will be around 25%. Which is much better than the previous attempt.

What I did in post to colour correct.
- I use RGB Curves. On the graph, I try my best to make a slight “S” shape. Just to bring out the red on the couch and to bring the black in their shirt.
- I use the Fast Colour Corrector. Using the Hue and Angle (circle graph), I use the background as a guide to whiten it.

Basically, that’s what I did. I hope this experience of mine could help you out with your future exploration in shooting video!

I shall continue my quest in capturing better audio!!

Equipment Used :-
- Canon 60D
- Samyang 35mm Lens
- Rode ShotGun Mic

Edited with :-
- Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5

Comments, criticisms and scrutinizations are greatly welcomed.

It was my second paid wedding video assignment as a freelance. So far, I have done 5 weddings in total. Both paid and non-payment assignments. This one was particularly challenging. I had to shoot it all by myself. At the very last minute, the boss unable to come as he had to attend last minute job. It was during the weekend of 10.11.12. Nice date to get married. Anyway, I was in a mix reaction. Feeling Angry and having that Bring It On kind of attitude.

Angry, because I am a newbie. Even Philip Bloom does not like to do weddings. And he even can't think of shooting wedding alone. I really appreciate if the boss has the confidence in me pulling it off. At the same time, I did not know whether I do justice to his company's branding. I would not want to spoil his company's branding or name. Furthermore, I have only one camera body.

Bring It On, because I was telling myself, if I do not do it now (shooting alone), when will it be? My baby is coming in few weeks time. And after that, I do not know whether I have spare time to do video shoots.

So, I decided to "FLY". That was my strategy considering logistics, transportation, lighter workflow, ease of usage and one man show situation. I am going to share what I have learned and experienced. Hope it will help you guys in a way or another. Prior to this shoot, I have read quite a bit on working with stabilizer.

Things to note when "FLYING" :

Balance
- Need to spend quite some time on this area. Got to balance the set up properly so to have a smoother shoot.
- Once balanced, mark out the "sweet spot". This will be a great help if in any case you decided to use your camera to be shot on other equipments.
- CheesyCam guide to perfect balance your stabilizer.

Foucs
- How you focus shall determine your working space between you and your subject. Not forgetting your composition.
- At this shoot, I focus at 1ft for smaller working space and 3ft for bigger working space.

White Balance
- I found out that white balance could be off if you are moving from outdoor to inddor and vice versa.
- I set my white balance to AWB. It helps a lot.
- When there is a opportunity for me to switch back to my favourite K white balance, I will do it. To have more control.

Exposure
- Forget about moving from outdoor to indoor and vice versa.
- Got to pick one environment to shoot. If not, your exposure will be way off.
- In this shoot, I just concentrate on indoor settings. Even if I had to do a walk in shoot from outdoor to indoor, I just concentrate on the indoor settings.

Camera Movement
- Still learning and exploring.

eleveninth>>> I did install ML in one of my SD cards. Thought I want to try it out for the recent wedding post. At the last minute, I never get to fully try it out as I was shooting alone. I cannot take the risk. I need time to play with ML.

What I like about the ML :-
- Huge range for Kelvin temperature settings.
- AGC OFF ---- POWER !!! Yet to find the "sweet-spot" for audio recording.
- Yet to explore other options.

What I do not like about the ML (for now) :-
- Focus peaking ---- It is so confusing with the red blue yellow dots all over the place. Unlike my Swivi monitor, depending on which area you want to focus, there will be green lines for indication. If not, there will none or minimal presence of the green lines.

Nevertheless, thanks to you if not I would not take the risk on ML. I must say that I have yet to explore ML which I personally feel that in my later part of my journey, I would love it. It has lots of functions and it offers options for users.

Thanks to you Bro eleveninth. Thanks for sharing.

28th December 2012

I became a father on 21 December 2012. I am so happy and relieved that both my wife and my son are safe and in good health. I could not have asked for anything more. Praises to Allah.

I have been wanting to do this video eversince I knew my wife is pregnant. Things just did not go my way due to restrictions, logistics issues and also showing support to my wife. I just make do with the limitations and try to work with it. No matter what, the video taking was secondary. Focusing and ensuring that my wife is safe was my top priority.

Nevertheless, for the past week, I have been a sucker for baby stuffs. Hehehehe. No more visits to the local camera stores. No more reading up about video techniques, reviews, etc. It is all about Kiddy Palace, MotherCare, MummySG forums. You know what I mean.

Still, this video was shot with my Canon 60D, my friend’s GoPro 2 (did not manage to buy GoPro 3 as my wife EDD was on 6th Jan..my planning was way off) and my 3 year old Samsung Omnia 2.

This time around, I tried to color correct my video using the RGB curves and I nailed it. I mean, previously, I was using the Fast Colour Corrector. With RGB curves, you can actually bring out the colors to the fullest. The results is far more better than using the Fast Colour Corrector. Not that perfect. I need more time to practise and explore its function.

I hope I am able to come up with a video on how I do the color correcting in 2013. Right now, I am still adjusting my life as a father. Sleepless nights. Changing baby diapers. Bathing him. And many more to come which I am looking forward to them. At the same time, I am trying to organise my free time to shoot video and continue my video making learning journey.

Hope you guys love the video. Just the way I would want to remember. :)

5th January 2013

Was honored to capture my cousin's wedding on the 17/18 November 2012.

I realized that no matter how many wedding videos you have done, every wedding is of different experience.

Yes, I have garnered about 1 year of shooting experience. 1 year of trial and error. 1 year of exploring and experimenting. 1TB of memory space. Compared to my very first wedding shoot, this time around, I have more options in terms of ability and better equipped with knowledge and tools.

Looking back, mistakes I have made in my wedding shoots and my own video projects, I still making them here and there. Till today, I have yet to define my workflow.

One thing for sure, I gain confidence. Confidence to face the challenges. Confidence to overcome obstacles.

Without criticisms and opinions that I received in my humble thread, I do not think I have come this far.

My learning journey shall not end here. I shall keep on. With the arrival of my baby boy, I shall make time, find the time and better organize time. This is my New Year resolution. Keep on to my learning journey.

Once again, comments and criticism are greatly welcomed.

Happy New Year to everyone!!
