Fabbri - BMP-1 - Soviet Amphibious Tracked Infantry Fighting Vehicle

The BMP-1 is a Soviet amphibious tracked infantry fighting vehicle. BMP stands for Boyevaya Mashina Pekhoty meaning "infantry fighting vehicle". It was the world's first mass-produced infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) with over 20,000 units produced from 1966 to 1982 - and is still in use today!

The BMP-1 was a revolutionary design combining the properties of an armored personnel carrier (APC) and a light tank. The Soviet military leadership saw any future wars as being conducted with nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, where unprotected infantry would soon be either killed or incapacitated by radiation or chemical and biological agents.

A vehicle like the BMP would allow infantry to operate from the relative safety of its armored, radiation shielded interior in contaminated areas and to fight alongside it in uncontaminated areas. It would increase infantry squad mobility, provide fire support to them, and also be able to fight alongside main battle tanks.

The American developed the Bradley IFV largely in response to the Soviet BMP family of infantry fighting vehicles, and to serve as both an armored personnel carrier (APC), and a tank-killer.







One specific design requirement of the Bradley was that it should be as fast as the then new M1 Abrams main battle tank so that they could maintain formations while moving.

The T-72 is a Soviet-designed main battle tank that entered production in 1970. The Russian Federation has over 5,000 T-72 tanks in use, including around 2,000 in active service and 3,000 in reserves.

About 20,000 T-72 tanks were built, making it one of the most widely produced post–World War II tanks, second only to the T-54/55 family. The T-72 was widely exported and saw service in 40 countries and in numerous conflicts. Improved variants are still being built for export customers.

Many Western analysts regard the T-72 tank worrisome because, at least theoretically, its 125 mm 2A46 main gun is capable of destroying any modern main battle tank in the world today, including the American's M1 Abrams.

The T-80 is a third-generation main battle tank (MBT) designed and manufactured in the Soviet Union. A development of the T-64, it entered service in 1976.

South Korea (a close ally of America) was given T-80 tanks by the Russians as a payment for Russian debts incurred during the days of the Soviet Union.

The tanks were deliverd in three batches - originally, eighty T-80 were planned. As of 2016, these T-80 are being retired due to cost and maintenance reasons.

T-90 is a Russian third-generation main battle tank that is essentially an upgraded version of T-72B. It is currently the most modern tank in service with the Russian Army.

The T-90, nicknamed "Vladimir" in its later iterations, came about from post Cold War Russia's initiative to keep only one main battle tank in production, the simpler and more reliable T-72 or the more complex T-80.

A modern variation of the T-72B and incorporates many features found on the T-80U this tank was originally called the T-72BU, but later renamed to T-90 instead.

The T-90 is an effective warrior that balances capabilities and complexity against cost.

The latest upgraded version of the Russian T-90 main battle tank is the T-90MS (the model shown below)- also referred as Tagil which was first revealed to the world in 2011. It is a modernized version and has a number of improvements and improved operational capabilities over its predecessor. It is reported India plans to obtain 236 units of these main battle tanks.

Russia's next generation main battle tank after the T-90 would be the T-14 Armata. This tank was first shown in public during rehearsals for the 2015 Moscow Victory Day Parade.

The most significant new feature of this tank is its unmanned turret, with the crew of three seated in an armored capsule in the front of the hull.
