Hi thanks for the support. I do own a SB-600 flash but I only use it for portrait shots (mainly cosplay photos which I have not been taking).

For figure shots I prefer to slowly play and see how my lights interact with the subjects. I also love the use of reflectors (TOILET ROLLS FTW!) to create fill light or sometimes even key light (using the light I used for rim lighting).

I hope I didn't bore you with what I said but if you're more interested in lighting you can try look at this.

Haha. I think my wife-to-be will never let me collect such figurines.

Maybe will one day try to get something interesting... like Wolverine or Batman. I still can't get over how good you can make these with just err.. toilet paper rolls :bsmilie:

I'm a fellow D5000 user and I really love the colours from this cam!

jus curious how u do those color effects hehe

Eh... I use a reflector if my lighting has too much contrast. (E.g light and dark.)
It is particularly useful if I want to define the form on the darker side.

In your case I think you have enough lighting (due to the direction of your light source) hence a reflector didn't work too obviously. You might also want to try adjusting the position of the reflector to see if optimal effect is achieved?

For Tsukasa's photo I think you can generally avoid frontal lighting as it makes her looks flat. I mean, anime character themselves do not have very defined features so our lighting should make them stand out more. I would suggest a side lighting to add more dimension :)

Toilet roll in this case wasn't very effective also.

Maybe you can take a look at this youtube video.

It uses a reflector as the fill light; the weaker light source opposite your key (main) light to define form on the darker side.

I hope it helps :D

For Tsukasa's photo, what I did was using the torch shooting it down directly at the toilet paper and allow the toilet paper to reflect the light back to the character. Maybe thats why it looks flat. LoL I will try another way later tonight and see how it will look like.

Thanks for teaching. :D

No problem. Hope I was of help :)

I was taking photos of another figurine so I figured I could demo a little on what reflectors can do.

No use of reflector, light source slightly behind her, at right of us.

Reflector at the right of us.

Reflector at the left of us.

Lastly, I edited the colors but the effects should show; reflectors on each side.

It'll generally help to define more form and separates your subject from the background.

Hope it is clearer

Don't mind me reposting the above photo again, for the sake of being wholesome.
