Read this and try it out first. By right you should use a tripod, mirror lockup + delay/cable release + a much faster shutter speed to eliminate all these extra variables. Only then will you be able to conclusively determine if your lens is fine.

And there's sth seriously wrong with all of your "pipe" photos.

ok i got tripod. This is the test chart shot.
"Focus Here and This text should be perfect in focus" are taken in horizontal line with my centre AF sensor of D70.

Are you sure the AF area is in the centre? Seems a little more to the left to me. The left is sharper than the centre (i.e., the portion to the left of the part that says 'focus here')

Your angle seems a bit off too.

the paper is tilted. left is higher then the right. left side is still in the plane of focus, the right side is in front of the plane, thats why seems to be slightly blur.

Yeap, you should align the test chart properly to conduct a conclusive test. Perform the test in a well lit room, the camera's AF sensor works better with more available light, low ambient light complicates the test.

Is your Tamron f/2.8 the motorized version or the older one that depends on your D70's AF motor? If its the one utilizing your body's AF motor then there is practically nothing to calibrate by Tamron. Nikon can calibrate your D70 to the tamron though but it'll mess up the body driven focusing for your other lenses. If I remember correctly, Nikon calibrates the cameras based on the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4.

this tamron got BIM. Recently purchased. 3 years warranty.

Dude you cant compare the 50mm with the tamron. i had the same issue. well try AF lock and than release the shutter. before tat mostly like yours after that. only sharp shots :)

btw use a tripod when doing test and set timer instead of using your hands to release the shutter

latest test shot. paper seems to be just a bit tilted. but this is my best try. I quite happy to see focus is in line with words. clear my doubt. this is sharp copy.

Hereby, i close this thread. Thz bros for all suggestions.

All that hooha only to find that the lens is perfectly fine. -_-

anyway announcing that you are closing the thread is not the same as actually closing it. go to thread tools and close the thread.

hi, srry....look like i cant close this thread yet.

I found that even though test chart show correct focus, real life shootings such as shooting portraits of my colleague, stationary phone have OOF problem. Can't get sharp focus on the object.....

I used to shoot D60 with 18-105mm VR. No problem at all.
So..it cannot be I dont know how to use current D70 DSLR. lol

must be this lens has focusing issue...

if the chart show correct focus and real life shootings are OOF, can the fault be the one behind the cam?

aiyoh, even I'm using a 17~55f2.8, I don't always shoot at f2.8.

try to understand the lens, you will get the best out of it...

no, it doesn't mean the lens has focussing issues. that seems to be your answer to all the problems in the world, that the lens has focusing issues.

if you don't post pictures, we can't tell you what's wrong. it could be hand shake, soft images, flare, or an assortment of other problems unrelated to focusing. or it could be that your selected focus point is not on your subject.

Just post a few examples, with the exif data.

DUDE !!! if the test charts shows its fine it's fine. the rest is YOUR own problem. i have mention i faced the same thing before and try to AF-L <-autofocus lock and recompose normally helps. you are one customer i wish i dont meet. no offense. 90% blur photos are the photographer's fault. Who ask you shoot wide open and zoom till 100% and expect sharp photos??? GET REAL!!!! you paid $500 for that glass and i told you YOU CANNOT COMPARE with the 50/18 wanna feel miserable?? compare to the 55/2.8 lah. both 2.8 what how come yours 1/2 as sharp. there are more the photography and SHARP photos.

hope you can make sense and many ppl here have been v patient already.

go try AF-L and shoot see how it goes!! the most sell off get the 1755 period!!!!
