My PowerShot S5 IS

Thinking of getting 1000D when it is out in Aug, but factoring the zoom lens high cost, & a newbie in photography, I decided to get the S5 IS first to play around and practise all the concepts of digital photography. Cost me only $370 for the camera. So if I dun like this hobby then I dun lost alot of $.
It is the natural way to grow from knowing nothing in digital photography to use a full feature P&S and slowly move into dSLR. I think you are on the right track as compare to just jump in with two feet into dSLR and then realize that it is not your cup of tea. I came from the same route so I can understand where you come from.

However, once you started adding an adapter with wide/Tele converter and then a 430EX external flash, then the cost adds up. Although 430EX is fully compatible with your future Canon dSLRs.

Anyone of you have some tips to protect the filter without taking it out?

I have the adapter + filter mounted but I don't want everytime to take the filter off after using it.

Any lens cap available? how much is it ? :D

I got a 3rd party lens cap from MS for $10 (I think it's about there, can't remember cos it was a few months ago).

is it really necessary to use ND filters to take long exposure shots / slow shutter shots in broad daylight?

i cant seem to find any sellers for the ND filters *sobs* do you guys use it?
i have 130bucks to splurge on camera accessories what should i get?
i want a cheap tripod hmm + other stuffs

New, cheap tripod below $40 can get. :-)
Juz got a 2nd hand Emoblitz auto flash, no TTL, but got zoom, slave, swivel and angle for $35. :-) But colour is silver + black, not so nice looking. Flash much brighter than in-built flash! Can feel the extra weight after attaching to the camera with 4 AA batteries in the flash.

For the ND really depends. Using the CDK firmware, you can get up to six minutes of exposure. You need a really high ND to make use of that though. For slow shutter, you can try shooting at f8. Assume you want to shoot moving water?

Before you spend your money, what do you like to shoot?

Go look at all the photos you have taken. Do you prefer landscapes? Macros? Birds, people etc etc. This will help dictate what you can purchase.

ooohh so i'll just buy nd then, i tried so hard to shoot moving water at 5pm and its ultrabright.

i think i prefer landscapes and conceptual dark pieces. hehe

pimp ur camera ar? i tell u, there are lots of ways, budget or just simply BBB. :)

u can always go the expensive way, adapter + filter + Tripod -------> Wide-angle/Teleconverter -----> External Flash --------> den the vicious cycle starts again, where u upgrade everything, there is almost no end to it.

Or a cheaper way, is just look at all those ingenious DIY gadgets u can find online. Well, they may not look very nice (like mine, so i use them only at home cause my mom will like scold me for using them in public) but it very well does serve its purpose. DIY Lightboxes, reflectors, diffusers etc... They can be made out from the simpliest materials such as used film canisters/toilet roll/paper. dunno lar, so many.

You can also "hack" you S5, installing a script into it so u can exploit the camera's functions to the max.

So suggest u to start small, experiment. Once u think u have reached the limits with its current capabilities, DEN u go buy buy buy!

PS: Mutant: THANKS! Lolx

I got the BBB virus! next is to buy 12 more Eneloop batteries and 4 batt charger! The current eneloop in my cam works well, but the charger given can only charge 2 batt. 4 for cam, 4 for flash, 8 for spare. Wah.. heavy lugging all that around..

So I can claim bragging rights if my camera is attached to a carbon fibre tripod that cost more then the price of the camera? :bsmilie:

eew. i just realize after 3 months mine is made in china. is it a bad omen?

guys i still need to buy stuffs. recommend recommend.
plsssss

Fellow S5 users, can you please advise a newbie (that's me) how to shoot photos at night, handheld (i.e. no tripod), objects moving in low light condition. Just returned from a shooting from the Night Festival and most of pics turned our blur...sob sob. Appreciate your help so I can try again next time.

No way unless u use an external flash with a faster shutter speed. The built-in flash is still pretty weak though.

Pardon my ignorance - can DSLR shoot in low light condition without flash then?

If you have the 50mm f1.0, and pump the ISO, I guess you can.

One problem with smaller point and shoots is that there is too much noise once you start increasing the sensitivity of the sensor (aka increasing the ISO). Also, you cannot really open up the aperture that much, f2.7 is the most you will get for the S2/3/5. Advantage of the dSLR is the bigger sensor, so there is less noise at the equivalent ISO, and also the ability to use fast (big aperture) lenses. Of course, these lenses are very expensive, and very big. The 50mm f1.0 is about USD $3000, and they stopped making them a while ago.

My friend has a Canon G5 (think this was the best of the G series), it has a f2.0 lens, and that extra bit of light does make a difference.

For landscapes, a Wide Converter might be useful. You might want to get a polariser also.

If you cannot use a tripod, use objects around you to support the camera. Or carry a bean bag with you, use this on things like stiff bushes, place the camera on the bean bag.
