It is the natural way to grow from knowing nothing in digital photography to use a full feature P&S and slowly move into dSLR. I think you are on the right track as compare to just jump in with two feet into dSLR and then realize that it is not your cup of tea. I came from the same route so I can understand where you come from.Thinking of getting 1000D when it is out in Aug, but factoring the zoom lens high cost, & a newbie in photography, I decided to get the S5 IS first to play around and practise all the concepts of digital photography. Cost me only $370 for the camera. So if I dun like this hobby then I dun lost alot of $.
However, once you started adding an adapter with wide/Tele converter and then a 430EX external flash, then the cost adds up. Although 430EX is fully compatible with your future Canon dSLRs.
