the adapter and hood is one set at $48. The wide conversion lens at $180.

U can buy other brands but may experience complications such as fit problems and vignetting.

so we can buy from any shops right?

btw dya have msn?

If you really want to make your water 'silky smooth' :bsmilie: you have to use ND filters to darken the scene.

hehe, silky smooth! Don't Mess with the filters :)

It's best always to go for the originals :) if not u can try raynox or lensmate. more reputable 3rd party converters

well im gonna get the set then, lens adapter and hood. but i googled the S5 IS hood isnt the flowershaped one ar? hoho i want those like fujifilm one got sell anot?

raynox/lensmate got sell for S5 IS anot? are they cheaper? haha. can someone recommend me. just hood looking for those "flower" shape ones + adapter any brand.

i researched on the lensmate site, they keep on stating bout 55mm adapter. so whats does that mean? we can use the 55mm one too?is there a distinct difference between both?

Unfortunately there is no petal hood for the S2/3/5 IS. Canon's official hood is circular.

If you just want the adapter, without the hood, go for 3rd party, like Raynox or Lensmate. This is because they are made of metal, unlike Canon's plastic one. Also, the price is almost the same. I prefer Lensmate, as the finish is almost the same as the camera's body. The Lensmate and Raynox have the same build quality.

Lensmate has both 58 & 52 mm versions, Raynox has only 52mm. There is no 55mm adapter, think you mean 52mm. If you buy official Canon accessories for your camera, you would have to get a 58mm adapter. If you get third party stuff, like Raynox, you would most likely need a 52mm adapter.

Filter size is the diameter across the filter thread. So, 58 mm means the diameter across the adapter is 5.8cm. This would mean all the filters you get, be they UV, ND or polarisers, would have to be 58mm.

I have the 58mm adapter with a UV filter. For my WC & TC, I bought the Raynox, so am using one 52mm adapter for each one. Makes it much easier just to use the bayonet mount to change converters.

I remember posting about the differences between 55 & 58 mm adapters a while ago. Cannot seem to find that thread.

It is alot easier to switch lenses using the bayonet mount instead of 'screw' and 'unscrew' the WA/Tele converters on and off.

I have a 52mm and a 58mm Lensmate adatper. The Raynox DCR6600PRO is always attached to the 52mm adapter and an UV filter is attached to the 58mm adapter.

been looking forward for something like that. hehe. i dont mind if it aint original, the hood that is, just to buff up the appeal.

anyway thank you for the understanding. so i understand that we have a 58mm diameter thread but you can have the step down ring adapter to make it 52mm? Why do people use 52mm instead of the default 58mm tho. from your point, i gather that its because of the availibility of more choice of lens? Besides that, any compelling factors for the need to downsize to 52mm? Will there be any sideeffects tho like vignetting and such?

Lastly, your Raynox all shipped from overseas or we can deal local wise thru a third party store?

Hello guys! I am now a proud owner of a Canon S5 IS. My 1st camera! (Camera in handphone not counted.)Bought 2nd hand yesterday, everything included; some items never use before, also comes with extra mini tripod.

do you think they are more expensive than canon one or its just me? the adapter is 52mm but i thought ours is 58mm? can use still?
Well, Canon adapter is a plastic tube and Lensmate's is a metal one but their price are similar. Lensmate also have 58mm adapter as well. However, Lensmate only sell via their online store so you will have to factor in the freight and handling charges.

If you are using Canon converters, they are all 58mm so you might want to make sure you don't get the wrong diameter adapter.

EDIT: one more point: Canon adapter comes with the lens hood.

If all you need is the lens hood, perhaps you should just go for the Canon Lens adapter/hood set. I don't think they can be sold separately. But with that, you will have the 58mm adapter that can fit all Canon converters that are designed for S5IS. In future, if you are interested in 3rd party converters that has a 52mm diameter, then you can get the 52mm adapter when you get that particular 3rd party converter.

Cheers.

If you have a 58mm adapter, stepping down to a 52mm filter will cause vignetting. You will end up blocking part of the light that is supposed to enter the lens. A 52 adapter with a step up to 58mm should be fine, best to physically check before purchasing the step up.

I use 58mm since I felt that it was easier to get filters in that size (I could not find the Hoya R72 in 52mm ;)). I do have 52mm adapters though, for my Raynox converters.

Raynox you can get from here. I should start charging Jim a commission every time I refer to that thread.

I think the lens hood is kind of useless for the lens on this camrea. It will not prevent any flare once you zoom in slightly.

Adapter is the cylindrical thing you mount in front of the camera. The side that goes on the camera is a bayonet mount, you just have to press a button on the camera and twist the mount slightly to take it off. The other end had threads on it, for filters, converters etc.

A converter is something you mount onto the adapter, you can get wide angle converters, which reduce the focal length of the lens, giving you a wider view. Tele converters, which increase the focal length of the lens, giving a more 'zoomed' in view. Macro converters, which change the minimum focus distance of the lens (among other things), let you magnify your subject.

oh so adapter does not allow lens to be on it? i see.. so i'll get the adapter and the hood right? they complement each other.

then if i wanna buy lens in future i need to get a converter? cause an adapter does not allow lens to be mount? kk

For P&S camera, like the S5 we have, cannot be fixed with lens like those used with the DSLR. Those that we use, we call them converter. Attach to the front of the built-in lens of the S5, they will then convert the built-in lens to suit various need, e.g. tele, wide, macro, etc.

Yes, you have to get the adapter tube first, then the subsequent accessories, like the filters, tele-conversion lens, WA conversion lens, etc.... Without the adapter, nothing can be attached to your S5 except the original caps that came with your purchase.

You will have to buy another type of lens cap if you fix the adapter to the camera, the original one can't be used with the adapter.
