Three things about tripods:

Unfortunately you can have only two. If you can afford it, go for weight (light) and stability. You will end up paying a bit more, but carrying your tripod around will not kill your back, and a gust of wind will not knock your tripod, along with your camera over.
Do you plan on getting a dSLR later in life? My personal policy is to get a better tripod right now, instead of getting a flimsy one, then changing to a better one later.
If you are planning to stick to cameras like the S5IS, you may want to look at Manfrotto , 718B, 728B or 785B. They are relatively light, and for small cameras, quite sturdy. All of them come with fixed heads and quick release plates.
If you want to get a dSLR later, you can have a look at the Manfrotto 190 series. You would of course have to get a head along with the legs. I prefer pan heads or three way heads (unlike most people who like ball heads).
I currently have a old 190 (think its a 1997 model) with:
056 (3D JUNIOR CAMERA HEAD)
454 (MICROPOSITIONING SLIDING PLATE)
323 (RECTANGULAR PLATE ADAPTOR)
OverKill
That is a slim Casio camera mounted on my tripod.
Weighs about 2.8 kg in total. I am awaiting the new 190 CX Pro3. :sweat:

I am a bit confused.
What is the adapter that you have for your camera? There are currently two in the market for the S2/S3/S5 IS (they are all the same!). You have one with 52mm front threads, and one with 58mm threads.
52mm filters will not fit on the 58mm adapter.
For the 58mm adapter, you will need a 58-52 step down ring to fit 52mm filters.

Well, mostly a matter of personal preference. But I believe in matching equipment. If you buy in anticipation of need, you are going to pay for depreciation of equipment while not utilising it. And in this case, you have to carry around more weight too if you wanna go 190. I believe for him, the 7 series Manfrotto will be great and like 785B, only 1 kg. Damn compact and small and light to carry around.
I doubt tripods depreciate.
And my 190 was quite useful when a bunch of monkeys tried to snatch my camera off the tripod in Bali. :bsmilie:Well, it is his choice in the end, I just gave him some options to look at.

Are you using the modo? I used it for movie cameras before, the panning action is quite useful.

For general use, this tripod is quite good. It has two modes you can switch between. Video mode allows pan and tilt (to use with the excellent movie mode in S5IS) and camera mode which allows free 360 degree rotation.
One thing to point out, although the pistol grip is very convenient to use but I noticed that the grip will get loose after prolong use. If you are just using the S5IS, I think it is ok. But, if you are considering adding an external flash such as 430EX, then it might not be able to support the combined weight if you have to tilt the camera at a steep angle. Anyway, the modo 785B is light weight so it makes a very good travel tripod if you are not overly demanding.

theoretically, this is true, however, for some one with only P&S experience, it is quite difficult to understand what is considered a better tripod.
Like most people, I started with simple P&S and bought an el cheapo tripod (but not those really flimsy one given FOC as freebie) which is very light weight. When I moved to a more advance P&S/ultra zoom such as S5IS (or S3IS in my case), I went for the Manfrotto 785B. At that time, I have no idea what a ball head is (and was not interested to find out) so the 785B with a built-in pistol grip head is a perfect fit for me. Later on, after I moved into dSLR, I then started looking and researching for a tripod that can support the camera and the lenses that I have (or plan to have).
It is easy for me to say I should get a decent tripod in the first place now that I am looking back from where I am. In my simple P&S time, I would not know I will need a ball head that can support up to 8kg and the compatibly strong tripod so that my dSLR and my heaviest 1.5kg lenses can be adequately supported.
Just speaking from my past experience.
Anyone uses any LCD film protector for your S5is? Got one from Palmware at about $10+. However it attracted dust like crazy (since application) and cannot even clean it off - surface is kind off sticky. Got so fed up that I removed it. Any better recommendations or forget about protection?
I think you applied it the wrong side up.
I got mine when i bought it earlier last year and was applied for me. As peekarwe said, u might have applied it the wrong side.
Got a working Nikon Speedlight with my old film SLR Nikon camera. Was wondering if it is okay to use it with my S5is? The flash units triggers of fine. Only problem is not sure what settings to use (camera and flash settings) to ensure correct exposure. Should I just continue to use the in build flash in the S5is? Tempted to use the Nikon as external flash since it should have a higher guide number and has adjuster head (with bounce, diffuser etc). Flash also seems to trigger off fine (even in Auto setting in flash unit) although I am not sure if the auto settings are correct/optimal.
The flash unit happens to a Nikon Speedlite SB-27.

Since you have already fired the flash with S5IS, it should work fine in manual mode. You are lucky that the flash didn't fry your S5IS' electronics as some of the older flash models will trigger a much higher voltage than the modern days electronic camera can take.
In the future, you might want to make sure how much voltage the flash will generate before connecting it to your new digital camera.

Hello S5IS Users! Hahax, i'm back to the forum after like being away from clubsnap so long. First place i came back was here, surprised to see so many S5IS users now. Page count 56 sia. Been playing with my S5 quite alot, so now i'm back to help u ppl looking for answers

Or you can get the original canon one (if they ever wanna produce) which comes with a hood. 52mm adapters are infamous for their vignetting, so personal recommendation is 58mm, and WA converters are 58mm (mostly).
For filters, UVfilter is just mainly for protection sake. For polarizers, u gotta decide what kind of photos you take more often, cause it would just piss u off if u more interested in lowlightings scenes since it reduces the light entering ur camera.
