Without any addtional lenses, the pic quality is very impressive, similarly for the FZ-18. Unfortunately the FZ-18 does not have a hotshoe which is a big minus point for me, unless u can live with that.

lol i dun think ill be using that, as i maybe will be just using its 'came with' accessories. but the FZ-18 come with an wide angle lens right? so is the FZ-18 better as i wont be buying any additional lens?

Yes the FZ-18 has a wide-angle lens and is very useful if u're a wide-angle shooter or like to shoot landscapes. Additional add ons are not that necessary unless u're using the S5 like myself, i've to get the adapter and hood set plus the wide conversion lens.

In additional, i recommend u using a filter to protect your lens.

very hard to choose between this two leh, for FZ-18, it gt wide angle lens, but people say that it is slow in response, which turns me off, then for S5 is dun haf wide angle lens... from wad u posted, so u mean using S5 , additional lens are necessary?

and also, how a filter protect the lens? is it expensive?

Yes of cos there're pros and cons for an ultra zoom so in this case is the slow AF. Yes i've to get the wide conversion lens for my S5 as its built-in 35mm at the wide end is not wide enough for me so adding the lens will convert it to 27mm.

Filters comes in many types most common in full-time lens protection is MC (multi-coated) protector and UV (ultraviolet) filter. The MC protector is simply a piece of glass/plastic which has multi layers of coatings to reduce flares and ghostings and the UV (which is most popular) filters out harmful UV rays from the sun which can be detected by camera sensors.

Pricing depends on brand, size, material and place of manufacture. Filters can cost as low as $10 to as much as over $300.

Yes. Here are 2 pics of it (without converter lens cos i don't have it). The first is without hood on while the next is with hood on. The set comes with hood. Got it for $48 at Bally Photo Funan. But do take note that once the hood is on, u cannot put the 58mm lens cap on.

ihv read ur post in front, if i were to put filter , that is the size that the cam will become? so big:o

Hi Snoweagle,
Atfer you attach the WA lens, do u see any dark corner in S5 native wide? or u must zoom in abit to avoid dark corner?

Yupee.....Brought my Canon S5 IS already. Wow, very good camera and produce very nice picture compare to my 1 year old Olympus u740. Brought it at HN Funan Centre at $799 and paid another $72 for another 2 years warranty from HN. Includes 2 + 2 GB SD card from scandisk, 1 Canon bag Kit, 1 Canon orignal leather bag and GP battery charger with 4 x 1800 rechargeable bty. But trade of the bty and charger for a scandisk high speed 2 gb SD card. Cos that bty charger will charge the 1800 bty to full charge at ard 12-15 hrs, as I have a half hour GP charger myself. So trade it off, got no use for me. The best thing is that can paid by credit card installment for 12 mths, so heart not so pain. Heee....Hee.....

very high price lah, but congrats to u! might not be a nice price but got nice freebies and its a nice cam-i bet!:)

It's not big as compared to a standard DSLR. It's still small to me.

Bro, i'm using the original one. At any range there's no vignetting whatsoever.

lols, i would just wan a cam which i can play with its manual settings and more options to a PnS without having a big size.

can the filter be put on without the adapter? that will be so much better!

No, u need the adapter to mount the filter. That's why all PowerShot models that have the option to attach the adapter for filters and conversion lenses have the removable ring for the attachment.

does that apply to the FZ18 too?

isnt it very large when u bring the cam for travelling?

Same for FZ-18. Large?? I think it's small. Maybe i'm just used to my 10D. In fact when i last travelled to Korea in June this year, i brought both my 10D and ex-A710 IS along.

hmm seems like the fz18 do not nid the adapter for that ?
I dun hab a camera to shot my FZ18 currently. The other 2 cam i have is out on loan. AW 46mm filter screw directly to the len. It will retract together with the len when power off. You won't even notice it's there. :bsmilie:

LA3 is ONLY needed if you intent to mount converter. If you intent to leave it with the cam when not using ur converter then it fit filter tread size 55mm.

U r rite... y can't Panasonic design FZ18 len tread 55mm solve all problems...
quoted from the fz18 thread. the price is too much for mi to handle, im 16 onli btw, later tio parents scold big time...

Perhaps the FZ-18 has a filter thread on the front lens barrel, but S5 IS doesn't have.
