My first try at artistic nude photography

Hi all,

I know my words here may not be so encouraging to many, but Melvin has done better than I had expected and most importantly, he now has experienced what other people who does nude photography experience.

Do take note, he was using FZ5 with tungsten lights and being first time shooting in a studio, first time shooting with tungsten, first time shooting nude... taking all that and more into considerations, he did well. Anyways, most importantly, he like what he took and that is the most important. Nude photogrpahy like any other arts is based on:

1. Who shot it
2. Who/what the subject is
3. Who views it

Like Student's works... Many does not see what he sees, but I'm one of his work's fan. Gary Tan's work are great and I like them. Guess everyone approaches the subject differently whether from the photographer's point of view or even the viewer's point of view. I approach nude differently too. Just like choosing one's spouse or partner, we see what others don't. And at times, others see what we don't.

Anyways, this is just my "personal" comment. This is only a start for you Melvin, hope to see more of your works to come. Keep them coming.

Yes, very encouraging indeed. For me, just wanna test or try it out to see how it feels, to see what are the difficulties. I guess with digital, it is somewhat easier in terms of exposure. I did struggled a little at the begining though. I will want to try a few more times. Like the saying goes, the first time ain't the best yet.:) :)

wow, really thank u for that saiful :embrass:

very strong and encouraging comments :) i will keep it up!

Is it too late to post mine for criticism as well?

I did not manage to get a studio for this series of shoots. Used a normal lamp for lighting.

This one is quite fun because I got her to stand in front of a frosted glass door and overexposed the shot to get the effect I wanted.

Beautiful images! Especially like the tone of #4

normally in artisitc nudes, pics avoid showing body hair. everything should be squeaky clean.
good effort for both photographer and model though!

Um - I m a nude model and I am also doing research about nudity, art and pornography. May I ask - why this fear of body hair? You sound like one of the Pre-Raphaelite artists - I think it was Millais but it could be another one - he couldn't deal with body hair because he has been looking at paintings where NO PUBIC hair was depicted on the female subjects - so he couldn't make love with his wife on their wedding night because he got so totally freaked out by body hair.

Din wanna start a new thread. So join you here with the following 2 shots. Taken with small apertures, but not small enough. Lights not quite enough for F16.

Nice work. Like the headshot (the last pic). Very spiritual.

One small quibble, in the first shot, her hair and/or shadows of hair spoil the smooth flow of her shoulder.

hey semota, nice nude study u've got there. 002 works for me, very artistically done!

on my views abt e body hair discussion,

I think it's perfectly fine unless e photographer's intention is to achieve something bare. Afterall, ever since e beginning, be it nude sculpture or art paintings, body hair has always been visible, isn't it?

Hi mau lovers, so you're the one. Both pictures were taken during the same session and of the same person and YOU have got to be the ONE la. Affirmative, cannot be any one else!!
So funny that you cannot recognise yourself in the pix. I hope moi din do so much post-processing that renders you not able to identify yourself. Maybe, you have always been seeing your own front in the full length mirror, but not the behind leh. :bsmilie:

BTW, still got quite a few of the pix taken during that session, but not quite processed yet. Will be posting them a bit later. Voulez vous?

According to WHOM?

And why?

And why should we follow this dumb rule?

Alternatively, I would be more than happy to do a series of close ups of the offending area after being rendered suitably sans hair and "squeaky clean" (all in the name of art of course) ;)

Yeah I am aware of this :) but i guess we are already in an era where Neo classcism no longer prevail. Because during those times and for the school of thought for the hairless :) the body was to be presented without flaw and pubic hair was considered as ghastly. But to me, beauty is in the body, the work of God or even the artistry of nature, and pubic hair belongs very much to the anatomy, so why shoulnd't I present it?

For me, beauty is not about slim models and symmetrical faces, plump people can be beautiful too, I do not intend to be shelved into a society of paradigms when we as photographers are supposed to be revered as artists who encapsulate creativity into our visuals.

I guess it all depends from which school of thought you are from. Nothing is really wrong nor right, as long as our message in our art is presented through, its an art with meaning and life.

Cheers :)
