My first pics with the D800

well, viewing on a tablet, even 3MP is enough (current iPad 2048x1536=3145728 → ≈3MP) :)

Yup... but viewing a 36.3mpx on a 3mpx size will see a even sharper images right? But I do agree that buy 36.3mpx.. must know how to use up the camera to its potential.

But you will only see parts of the photo at any one time due to it's size :)

I guess I'm stating the obvious here - once the 36MP and the 16MP photos are downsampled to say 1000 x 667, there is hardly any visible difference between the two :bsmilie:

Sorry, I realised that I didn't quite answer the question correctly.

Yes, if a 36MP file (in JPEG format) is loaded into a tablet (IPAD etc.) and let the tablet resize the photo to match the display size, the photo is sharper. However this is my general observation only as I don't have 2 siimilar photos (but one at 36MP and the other at 16MP to compare).....

Hmm...my experience seemed to be different. Maybe got to compare again... Spent too much time resizing for my iPad..

I used to do that as well. Gave up because couldn't see much (if any) difference with the different file sizes. Maybe I wasn't doing it right :dunno:

Anyway, was quite surprised with the results. I basically converted the RAW file to JPG in CS5. The pixels remains at 7360 X 4912. The file size is 9.5MB :o But the improvement in "sharpness" is significant. I assume you will see the same results on the Ipad, especially with the New Ipad.

Damn, this D800 is going to cost me a lot of money. Need to upgrade computer to process the huge files faster and new ipad to view the finished pics on the go :faint:

Congrats, Warren on your new Nikon. Great photos. I'm tempted to switch but still on the fence still...

Thanks Denis. Am enjoying the cam but I am sure you will be able to utilise all those millions & millions of tiny pixels better than me :D If you need more tempting, let me know ;)

Meanwhile, here is one taken yesterday. Shutter count is already >1800, so I guess no longer "first pics" :bsmilie:

Very nice skin tone. Any low light picture to share ?
Thanks

if the 3MP is optimally captured, not necessarily... and a, say, 16MP image downsized to 3MP will hardly look different to a 36MP image if they are all downsized in a similar workflow to fit a 3MP screen...

at 16MP, both length and width are already greater than 2x that of the 3MP screen, so to fit the image to screen by downsizing to 3MP, pixel information would already have to be reduced >4:1... beyond that resolution, there should not be any visible increase in "sharpness" with greater MP capture if the captures to be compared are similarly well taken in technical terms*... there's simply not enough pixels available on the screen to show more details (talking about viewing full image resized to fit screen, not full image and then zooming in to look at particular areas at 100%)... :)

*note: sharpness in photographic terms is the amount of detail that may be seen, not to be confused with acuity which is the strength of the edge contrast, which is what makes an image look "crisp", and which is what is actually being changed when we "sharpen" an image in Photoshop with the "Sharpening" tools and with "High Pass" filter

Sorry, haven't got any worthwhile to share at this time. I am normally a good light shooter - either natural or artificial light :D

Not sharp leh ........

Sure lah, not enough lighting and handle close to object + my hand shake, but at lease can be used like FX lens

What's the point of this pictures? It doesn't show anything beyond the really shallow DOF afforded by a macro lens on a FF body.

Ya, my main point is still can be use like FX lens in FX mode.
Even the 35mm DX and works as well.

Ha ha sorry I'll hijack your thread :)

Finally managed to try out the D800 in the studio. The lighting wasn't quite set up the way I wanted but it's ok. At least can experiment with different conditions to see how the D800 performs.

Had wanted to use base ISO of 100 and f8.0 but had to settle for ISO800 and f4.0. Noise is evident but looks ok when downsampled. As expected, a 1000 x 667 pixel photo specifically for viewing on the web does not do justice to the sensor's capability. Has to be viewed from at least 50% and up.

Will be trying to set up a studio shoot to utilise more of those pixels, but in the meantime, here is a modest photo to share. No cropping. Comments welcomed.

Went to shoot the SIN 2012 event last weekend. There has been a fair amount of discussions re the suitablility of the D800/E for event shoot. Well, after an exhausting Saturday, I must say I am pretty happy with how the D800 performs. No issue with using the D800 for event shoot (for me at least). Again, the only thing of concern is processing the large RAW files after the event (but I guess a newer & more powerful computer can easily handle)

The resolution of the sensor is indeed outstanding as can be seen in the following photos.

No problem. Now waiting for next week's PC show to find some good price upgrades. Looking to buy an SSD drive :bsmilie:
