No problem. Now waiting for next week's PC show to find some good price upgrades. Looking to buy an SSD drive :bsmilie:

Great plan, if u really wanna play with 75mb RAW Files the only way to go with SSD.

SSD definitely for the speed, but larger capacity SSD are really expensive! 75MB RAW files will fill up a 128GB or 256GB SSD pretty quickly, I would imagine.

I think it is marketed primarily as a studio and landscape cam. So it can be very unforgiving in certain situations where there is slight movement and this shows if you pixel peep. Take for example in a wedding shoot and street photography.

Yes, it is indeed a market leading sensor in the FF market. I find that normally one will need a longer lens like 85 mm & above to pull in the details. The above pic is half body so I am reasonably close to the subject. More challenging will be 3/4 or full body shot at 50mm. Will post another eg when I get home later :)

Must really thanks TS and all contributors to this thread as I learned alot just by reading thru all the 5 pages. Very tempted to get the D800 and have been on my mind for weeks. Like one CSer said I am trying my best not to walk in to a camera shop until a month or so later hoping the price will stablised to a reasonable level ($4000 or less ?!?)

You're are welcomed. Yeah, it's best not to walk into a camera shop. Although in very short supply, it is still possible to find a unit if you do alot of leg work and a bit of luck is on your side. As for the price, I think it will unfortunately stay high for quite a while yet....

Anyway, I am running out of "first pics" to post :bsmilie: But i thought the following are worth sharing. They are not to show how well the pic can crop (have enough of those ) but rather how well the 70-200mm VRII can perform with the D800.

Taken in low light, around 9pm - just one table lamp behing me. At 200mm, F2.8, 1/13sec, ISO3200. NOW I UNDERSTAND WHY MANY OF THE LENSES RECOMMENDED BY NIKON FOR THE D800/E ARE VRs !!!

As shot

Trying out some different shooting last week end. This time it's the car drifting event at the Changi Exhibition Centre.

As is expected the ability to crop the photo is such a major plus feature of the D800/E. And surprisingly, I am no longer too bothered with the slower frame rate. Also pleased to report that there are no issues with buffer locking up...

More pictures can be viewed here:

All shot with the 70-200 VRII.

As usual, comments are welcomed.

Thanks so much for sharing these photos :)
Really shows the resolving capability of this camera.
Looks like it handles events and fast-action photography really well.

Do you photograph landscapes? Interested to see the dynamic range of this camera.

Thanks for appreciating.

I am not really into landscape unless I go on holiday :bsmilie: Am working on it and will share when available.

Wow, at 1/13secs still very sharp

Like to share some information re the file size. The size of a RAW file is typically around 39MB to 41MB. However, for scene with lots of detail & texture such as the one below, the size is 47.4MB! The TIFF version becomes 212MB !! You can imagine the demand on storage space :o All my working files are now stored on a SSD drive and it does help speed up the processing. BTW, a 32GB SD card can hold about 770 RAW photo files of around 40MB each.

Don't mind if I tag along on this thread. Pictures taken this afternoon in the garden with 85mm f/1.8 lens and extension tube.

Great flower pics, especially the bottlebrush. I can imagine how the photos look like at full size. Makes me wanna go take some macro tomorrow :bsmilie:

I know this is a little off topic but how much did you pay for the D800? Non E version. I have an issue with a photography store at Funan due to their mistakes. I don't want to name them but they've made me wait for a price they offered...took my deposit and later told me the price is higher and are asking me to pay the difference.

I bought it some 2 months ago at rrp of $4488. Frankly I am not aware of any shop in Funan selling below this price. So either a real mistake (unlikely) or a scam....

Sharing one of cropped image
