My first pics with the D800

Bro Lunas,

I'm from the planet Nikon I hv a D300s & D700 for my hobby. Been thinking hard for past 5 mths if I shd get this new D800 but after having seen these photos I've decided so it's time to SSS then BBB;p

I see. At least not so bad when you upgrade to D800...if you hv DX lens, still can use.

Honestly, you hv D700, do you need 36MP?

For me, I was using Fujifilm S5Pro & D300, I sold S5Pro and top up to get D800..and D800 is my first FX cam.

Bro Luna's, true I dun need 36MP but I loved the photos this new D800 can produce frm what I see here. Currently of the 8 lenses I hv only 2 r DX so most likely will still keep them. Any idea if u can manually downsize the MP but still get the best details n contrast?

I like you from planet nikon.

But once you already set in 36MP of Raw size and after produce the completed photos, I don't think you downsize or resize and upload here for the details & contrast still remain as same.

If you cropped yes the detailed & contrast still same as original output.

Cause so far mine is shots from Raw as 76mb and resize as 1mp for upload the photos and look like just so so only.

I've worried if upload for 20mb per piece & dunno when my photobucket account has been full storage.

That's what I facing on :)

Bro, actually I process all my pic. Color, contrast n etc are all tweaked. My take is if we shoot raw n process the pic, the output is much determined by how u process and not what the cam produced straight out of cam.

There are also some crappy D800 pic...haha. And on the flip side some really nice D700, so how do u compare?

Many Thanks to Rain Rockwell's comment & after I have reviewed my shooting style and my fav focal length. I have decided to opt for 28mm f/1.8G for my new D800..Initially, I was aiming for N24-70mm; but due to it's cost, I hv to look for an alternative.

After much review on the pictures I have taken at flickr; I enjoyed shooting at 17mm DX; I am more of an environment portraiture photographer than a close up. Hence, I decided to 28mm is the best for me. If I need close up, I can go for my existing primes of 50mm & 85mm or 70-200mm.

if i need zoom, no choice but to mount on the DX King 17-55mm f/2.8

28mm to take advantage of the high-res D800 for it's price is perfect for me and it complements on the lenses I hv.

Hope this is helpful for some who are considering.

Lunas: nice pics... punchy colors and all...is the vignetting deliberate PP?

Haven't logged into CS much recently as I am out of the country and have been very busy. Great to see some new contributions to the thread. Thanks guys.

Here are some recent "first" pics taken with the 24mm F1.4G. It combines so so beautifully with the D800 and I never knew that a wide angle lens can produce such superb resolution. Some may feel that it is not wide enough but it is just nice for me. If I need any wider, I will go with the fisheye.

If one buys a D800/E, one must also buy the 24mm F1.4G. Very simple decision. No further deliberation required. :bsmilie:

So here are 2 "wide" images. First is man made. The second is god made ;) Notice the lack of distortion (other than perspective distortion), especially evident in the MBS photo.

Fuh the MBS are awesome , and god made are always good :p
24 1.4G too expensive for me, will try same angle using 28 1.8G if got chance .

You win all here... Nothing to add :)

Even the legend AF 28mm f1.4D also nothing to bet.

Ha ha. I didn't win. Nikon won.

As can be expected, the files from the D800 sensor (& to be fair, from most of the current Sony derived sensors out there) lends itself well to heavy pp. The example here shows how well the details in shadow areas can be recovered.
