doesn't it depend on the person himself

If you are a lazy bum who is not proactive, you can work for 10 years and look at other newbies overtake you

Hahaha....if you are very lucky, you boss like you, even you are a lazy bum, he still promote you, increase your pay? :blah:

haha..of course it has to depend on the person himself, but dun forget that there are many other factors, there is a chinese saying "Tian Shi, Di Li & Ren He", in brief other factors like opportunity, being at the rite place at the rite time and meet the rite ppl.......

some ppl who may be hardworking, smart etc etc but may just lack in EQ or socialising skill and they may miss out on a whole lots of opportunity.....

Well actually, for your boss to like you, you've gotta be pretty hardworking as well - but maybe not in terms of your work. You get the connotations...

Most of the time, whether you get >= 5k is more on whether you are lucky and opportunity is given to you. You can be a grad and can work for more than 10 years, but if you are unlucky, no need to think about achieving this goal. Even if you have achieved that, how long will this "good time" last?
You might be competent but when you are unlucky, forget about 5k, you might even lose your job.

Sounds demoralizing? Too bad, it parts of life.

I second that brudder!.... :bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

Okay my take on this depressing topic heheh.....

If you have enough to feed your family and put your kids through school and am not debted to all the greedy banks and still have cash left over for you to indulge in photography or other hobbies....Thank your lucky stars.

I know of people who earn alot but owes alot too. Problem is when he asked the question of how long it takes to earn 5K...is that also a way to gauge how much one intends to borrow and spend now and hope upon hope that in his/her later days he/she can earn enough to pay back what was spent in advance....as in today. Scary? Alot of citizen here are caught in that loop and are still looping.

These days...even general degree grads have problem...now MBA is about to go out of style...next..will PhD be all the rave..double degrees?..what next? This is a game those at the tops (back room boys..the sort where if you dont have what we have..you can not play with us mentality) are playing..then what next? ( though it is happening already slowly but surely...) about which campus you got your degree from. Then where you got your post graduate MBA..etc. Then they check your secondary school you went. Which primary school you were sent to. Then they might also go back as far as what your parent did. Did they have degree? I can appreciate that a degree or basically having more education is good for everyone but it is not the begining and the end game to finding or defining success. I know that sound somewhat paranoid but these stuff are already happening around the world and what's scary is ....alot of these are already happen in Singapore too. For example family moving their homes just to be nearer to top schools to secure a place in it for their kids. Can you imagine how damaging all this will be in the years to come if your kids were not place in those top school. Your kids would feel so much more inferior. Anyone remember the movie GATTACA ( did i spell it right? ) About how at birth by looking at your genes they already dictate if you have the right gene join the elite portion of society or fit only for cheap manual labour work.

So before we start to think how long it will take for us to make 5K..I think there are bigger issues to consider and keep in mind all the time. The world is no longer the same. Even if the economy does improve, old jobs lost will never come back. Secure jobs are almost a thing of the past...especially if you have your sights on high paying jobs which everyone else is eyeing too besides you. Anything you can do today...someone in a developing country can do it and do it less then 5K per month! And sometime it might not even be a person that can replace you. Technology too can make your job obselete. So now you have to do more just to stay where you are.

Keep dreaming! hehe I dont mean that in a negative way. I do mean keep dreaming and working hard at getting it. But keep yourself grounded..and learn to stop once in a while to smell the roses and click a few shots along the way. Have fun along the way to finding your success and if you don't get it full mark, you will still have not fall too far behind and at least you enjoy abit of your life as you journey there. All the money in the world can sometime NOT BUY you everything you want..although when we are young and feeling gung ho about the world at our feet...it does feel like it could. :D Then again the day you finally hit the 5K mark..it might not be worth as much as it is now. And that could happen in less then a couple of years..whoes to say what the world will be like next year!

5k!? You're reaching the level of managers to reach that in Singapore. Engineering just don't cut it. You need to be Senior Engineer at LEAST.

And it all depends how you define $5k. If it's gross income, yeah maybe with benefits you can total to that amount. AFAIK, working in the semiconductor industry earns more $$$ than usual.

And you'll always want more... now it's 5k, when you reach 5k, it's 10k... a never ending cycle. Main thing is try enjoy what you do (I know it's easier said than done), money helps in job satisfaction but it's not the solution to all the problems.

If you're in engineering, I would suggest looking out for business opportunities to supplement your income, that's the way.

Banking and finance generally offer higher paying jobs, so if you might want to consider entering the industry.

SG$5K? Wonder when will I be able to smell it. :(

Get a overseas job, with basic pay and overseas allowance (some say hardship allowance), you can hit 5k faster. But u need to work like crazy, usually overseas assignments require or expect u to work at least 12 hours every day Mon-Sun. (Thats what I did when young)

true but not 100% true...

Yes...indeed banking industry do offer some high paying jobs...that depend on which bank and what role..If u are doing those more exotic job, like Treasury, Corporate/Structured Finance..especially at investment bank..earning 5 k after 3 years are quite common.

I started from 1st job at 1.5k as a finance graduate..during financial crisis. Very bad time for finance graduate to enter into industry. All I wanted at that time is a job and an opportunity to learn and perform, not concerned about the paid. And I managed to reach 5k in less than 3 years.

What I was looking for a job when graduated...one of my uncle told me that ;
"it is the boss to decide how much u should be paid when u first enter into the industry. After that..it is YOU, the one who shall decide how much u are deserved."

Be a president scholar...and sign on with the SAF... u will be drawing 5digits in 5yrs time....lol....its 5digit before the ' . '

if u can't reach 5K in payslip maybe u can have

1) 3K in payslip
2) 1K in passive income
3) 1K in freelance photography job
--------------------
total = $5,000

I think reaching 5k or even 10k in 5 years time is not really a prob. It really depends which line you are in.

For people doing sales, as long you manage to maintain or exceed the target given to you, there is actually no ceiling limiting your ability to earn that kind of money. People with no education can 10-20k per mth selling cars (Mercedes Benz) or average 6k selling Mazda or 4-5k selling Mitsibishi cars.

In sales line, the amt of money you earn is directly proportional to the effort you put in. If you want to earn 5k, join the sales line. I find that doing sales is not about ability to convince/confuse/con the consumer to buy, its the sincerity most of the time.

But do note that doing Sales line = sacrificing most of your time as you need to work on weekends. Hence, there must be effort put in to balance your time with your family and work.

that's why i think i cannot reach high pay bcos i use most of the time with my family. bcos i rather have time with family than have money as i never know when is the last day they will be around :)

If you are not a Manager at this time, you may need to work about 10 years before reaching 5K.....BUT....when you arrived at 5K, it will be worth only 2.5K or less in year 2014,

Another way of looking at things: 5K a month? Why dont look at the breakdown? Meaning the actual per hr rate. If a person earns 5K and work for 14hrs, his per hr rate will be ~$16 (based on 22 work day). Compare with one that is earning 3K and works 8hrs a month, per hr rate will be ~$17!!

So which is better?? IMO, higher paid means heavy responsibility = longer work hrs

;)
