Haha! Glad you like the pics. i think if i have inspired anyone to even think abt going there then i can't be doing too bad a job! Actually when i look back at the desert stars shots i keep thinking what i could do if i had a OGPS-2 unit.

Agadir. Wikitravel describes it thus:

Agadir is a city in the southern part of Morocco. It is of interest primarily because of its location, as it is surrounded by the Anti Atlas, the Sahara Desert, many natural parks, and secluded beaches which are all easily accessible from Agadir.

The city of Agadir itself is primarily a tourist resort that is popular with European travelers. It has a beach with all the appropriate facilities for beach-tourism. The city is especially attractive, it is clean and orderly with very friendly locals.

To me, that translated as a place that might be nice to hang out if you wanted to beach all-day and club all-night, the way Europeans like to at certain times of the year. If you don't, this place has not much to attract you.

It wasn't surprising therefore, that in the short evening and next morning that we had to explore this place, I had taken very few and uninteresting pictures...

My only shot that night of the beach front esplanade. No doubt a long expanse of sand fronts the ocean and, on the esplanade, plenty of restaurants abound. The lighted words in arabic on the hill must mean something but i think no one told us what it is...

On the coastal esplanade and probably the most notable landmark is the Golden Arches! We of course had our breakfast in there :-)

Reining in the Horses. Kiddie rides probably being brought out to entice the kids and to make a dirham or 2...

We were waiting for our tour guide outside the hotel and i decided to chase a bee hanging around the flower bed... Not exactly "macro"...

Off we go to Essouira. Glad to be leaving a rather characterless Agadir especially when one of the single girls in our group walking alone at night, had to fight off the advances of a man and then be chased by him to the hotel...

It was going to be a long journey from Agadir to Essouira but the start of it brought us to some of the best surfing spots in Morocco...

This was taken with an Nokia N8 thru the bus window. To surfers, this area must look heavenly.

We stopped at roadside stalls to savor the local fruits. The bananas were really very sweet.

definitely a good job. I am thinking of going there myself :)

The Amazing Tree-Climbing Goats of Morocco. We are told by our guide that nowhere in the World (hmmm) do goats climb trees but in the region around Agadir and he promised that he would find a spot where there were lots to see (whilst we were en route to Essouira). Our guide did not disappoint

These are Argon trees that they climb, to get to the argon fruit, which incidentally is touted for much wondrous uses, including skincare and health.

Camels also like to eat the fruit apparently.

Our guide started finding live scorpions for us to see... Tells us he's been handling them since he was a kid...

This scorpion is apparently pregnant and has a nastier demeanour. But the guide picked it up anyway...

We have lunch within the orchard of a farm compound in the middle of the desert.

Would this be considered "birding"?:bsmilie:

Our rides rest as we lunched.

Biscuits and tea at our desert bivouac. I've never been so glad to see the behind of a camel. Riding a camel for half an hour is fun. For a good 4 hours in total is torture... Glad we were headed to civilisation after this.

Morrocan mint tea!! Love tat..

So I was wondering why my wife was posting photos of goats climbing trees in Morroco on my FB and now I know! It's your fault! Now she wants to go to Morroco to see them do it! :bsmilie:

Just kidding - I hope you don't mind my expressing the sentiment that the pictures could be better composed (in general, it is just a slight adjustment for most cases, i.e. slightly more attention to every detail in the photograph) but these do showcase a very vibrant and interesting place, and I thank you for it. :)

Haha! Well its a long way to go just to see goats climb trees!

Not at all! I want to improve. These aren't the best. There's definitely room for improvement and perhaps you could tell me what i can do better. Always willing to learn!

The last city we visit before heading back to Marrakech (for new year's eve) and then taking a flight home via Casablanca, was Essaouira. I think after visting such a varied amount of places where there must have been a mixture of wander but also caution, it was nice to be somewhere that seemed more laidback, less hard-sell and certainly a little more relaxed, overall.

Essaouira is a western coastal town and our 1 day and night there seemed to showcase a city with much promise... Like Agadir, it has a beautiful expanse of beach. It however has more of a history with an ancient medina or walled city on the side. And i think the people here seem genuinely more friendly. Souvenir prices also seem lower than in Marrakech and other areas. As our guide recommends, buy what you want here!

The streets within the medina or walled city are perhaps less narrow than that of Fes or Marrakech...

The coast of Essouira near the fishing harbour at night. Coastal fortifications are the main feature of this place.

After endless days of tagine and couscous, this pick and grill seafood stalls by the medina seemed by far the best meal we had in Morocco. Cheap too!

One more of the Medina of Essaouria at Dusk

The next morning started with a walk along the esplanade that links the medina with the harbour fortifications...

You get a sense of how the rugged and rocky coastline is shaped by the battering of the Atlantic Ocean

Medieval harbour fortifications on an island. The beach is dotted with seagulls.

Fresh orange juice stalls are common in most of Morocco. The blood oranges look really nice but being kiasu Singaporeans we didn't dare take the risk.

I suppose this could be where our dinner last night came from. The size of the crabs was quite impressive!

And since it is near a fishing harbour, there's lots of...

Seagulls!

Seagulls...

...and more seagulls!

We paid a small fee for admission to the harbour fortifications next to the Medina. It was built by the Genoese in the 18th century & is known as a scala. I have also heard it referred to as a citadel. Whatever it was called, i must sat it was worth the 1 euro admission for the views...

I was surprised to find out from Wikipaedia later that this cannon was designed by my namesake... well kinda... Adrianus Crans.

7508721796_ae05d3c9a5_b.jpg

The round portal in the citadel perfectly framed the medina of Essouira.

Out beyond those ramparts is the mighty Atlantic Ocean.

A final look out towards the sea from the beach of Essouira before we depart for Marrakech again. This effectively ends our tour as we spend the last night in Marrakech on New Years' Eve and leave the next day for home.
