Gaffer tape.

lol....good one.

What's wrong if they (sec school kids) are really passionate in photography? I surely see some kids with much more respectable knowledge in photography than adults. $500 can pretty much get them a capable DSLR with kit lens to start their hobby. I certainly give those lots more respect than adults spending thousands on their 50D/5D mkII/D300/D700 or whatever and still take crappy photos.

no offense. but i saw this school kid using a 50D proudly showing off to his school mates, so i pretend and walk closer behind him. He is using auto mode. :bsmilie:

there is a line btw passion... i mean if the school kid can afford himself, kudos! but dun burden the parents (unless they are well off) especially in this bad economic situation.

pns is also a camera, and much more affordable then a DSLR.

skills aside, i am talking about the how much one had to pay for a DSLR.

crappy photo an adult may have but he is paying for something that he earns from his work as compared to a school kid with no job but parents paying for it on top of household expenses + other expenses.

what's wrong? DSLR cannot use auto-mode? uh oh...

anyways, pro level equipment doesn't mean anything at all if that body part between the eyes is empty.

i was at my friend's wedding and the photographer had a 1-series and other bits and pieces. for one, he was holding the camera like a P&S. then he set up a flash in the corner of the room that was pointed directly at him. it so happened that the couple was between him and the flash, and all his pictures kept coming out as silhouettes. and the funny thing was, he kept trying to adjust settings on the camera and scratching his head and wondering why like that?

quite funny lah. i think he's hired by the bridal studio which loaned him the equipment and paid $5 per hour.

I bet he can take more stunning shots than you do with his equipment. Don't judge a person by its cover..

Better don't bet.

Nowadays I realise wedding photographers are mostly newbies who think dslr + flash makes them pro. And they're the only ones who are willing to charge $300 - $500 to cover a wedding.

Don't always think "pros" with kit lens may have the skill.

I've already seen a couple of weddings where guests with PnS gave better images than the.. "pro" photographer with dSLR and cheapo lens. How did I know, the couples requested for photos from the guests coz the photog CMI.. :bsmilie:

To me, what separates the Pro and the amateur is that a Pro chooses the right kind of gears and have the technical know-how and experience to configures the settings accordingly for the situation that he/she is going to shoot. it doesnt matter if it is a kit lens, or L lens. use the right combination of gears for the right situation.

the amateur will probably have one a set of gear to use for all situation.

nothing wrong using auto mode but if the school kid wants to use a DSLR but only using auto mode, isn't that show off? Hes better off using a pns and dun waste his/her parents money. :)

you still dun get it.

School kid, no income using parent money, buy DSLR to show off (using auto mode)

vs

Working adult, with income and paid for everything himself, buy DSLR to show off (using auto mode)

while i dun care that working adult trying to show off, at least he is using his own money but unlike school kids or rather i called them brats.

Well said, there're always extremes :)

Spotted another absolute statement that "all school students' camera must have been purchased for them and not that they borrowed from their parents for project".

We have two now: "all premium lens are better than non premium in all aspect" and "all students' camera are not borrowed". I will try to spot more. :)

The best part is...not camera....but like the SLK (car)!!!! I came came across a few. *faint*

you guys should just let people buy what they want with their own money. i think we are all just sour about it. even i am, i mean, if my parents can buy me a car, then why not? DSLR is a toy too, and way cheaper than cars..haha.

I think I have no problem understanding the fact that it's the photographer that take photographs and not the cameras. I just feel that by equipping with better gears, the AD photographer could have make a good picture better. Skills aside, we cant deny the fact that the quality of the lenses differ optically. I would think that photography is their rice bowl and naturally they would like to invest more in the gears and deliver good products to the customers.

you're right i don't get it... i don't get why you seem to be so quick to categorise people. perhaps a little empathy will help you understand other people better.

there's nothing wrong wtih using a dslr on auto mode, because it inherently gives better picture quality than a P&S - even with a kit lens. do you use your dslr on manual exposure all the time?

does it mean that a person who uses manual is a better photographer than someone who uses the magic green square? allow me to remind you that aperture priority and shutter priority modes are also a form of automatic functions. i know lots of professionals who rarely uses manual exposure.

i was a student when i got my dslr. and no, it was not with my parent's money. contrary to your belief, teenagers and students have the ability to make their own money. i stopped taking pocket money when i was 17, and i was in school till 24.

therefore "all students with DSLRs bought it with their parents' money" is proven to be a fallacy

Maybe he just forgot to switch his dial, or it got set to auto mode by accident?

Cannot assume that it was bought with his parents' money.. maybe he saved up?

u dun get my point. the point is not about auto mode as i have stated.

the point is getting money from parents to buy DSLR. And it seems to me not much skills they have except toying with auto mode. The baseline here is not interest but just simply show off to the peers.

Like you, i stop taking money from my parents since 17. And i self paid my uni education, and all those electronic gadgets + other stuffs till now (i am close to 30).

But what if i tell u that school kid i tell you about is a secondary sch kid wearing shorts? The most sec 2. I doubt he can find a job (even fast food job) that he self paid his DSLR. :bsmilie:

And just happens so... i saw another secondary school ger and her friends in school uniforms using DSLR at vivo last fri nite when i went for the canon introductory course.

When i refering to school kids, i meant those in sch uniforms (with exception to JC students).

At their age, they should not be indulging in this 'luxury' items at the expenses of their parents who might not be so well off and working off their butt to see their children finish their education.

Thats the point i am getting at, simply spoilt brats that i am pointing at.

And how do you know that he wasn't using good glass just 'cause you didn't see a gold ring on his lenses? He could be using some primes that are not gold-ring, or he could be using a different lens at the point in time that you saw him, that happens to not have a gold ring.

Did you even determine exactly what lens he was using before slamming his choice of equipment?

aiya, nothing wrong with that lah, I think most of us started with auto mode also lah. A DSLR is a piece of equipment used to take photos, but somewhere along the path of time, human beings classified it as something only "serious" photographers should be using, and if one is using it, you should stay away from auto mode:dunno:

there is nothing wrong in skipping the pns and jump straight to DSLR. In fact, my view is all newbies should be using camera in the range of D300 and above (or any other brands equivalant. Why? Imagine newbies already no skill, still have to be bothered by slow focus, slow burst, and slow lens?

it is a piece of equipment used for taking photos......period.

Parents always wants the best for their children, if my child wants to go into the schools photography club, I would probably also get her a DSLR eventually so that she has a proper equipment to learn with.

DSLRs only? What about iPhones or even other touchscreen phones..? Dogs are the worst.. cost a bomb to pruchase and maintain. All kids have their own wants. Buying a compact now will cost 300-500, roughly the same as a 2nd hand DSLR with basic lens. Just want to know. Are you labelling these kids as brats solely because they own DSLRs and don't use creative zone modes? Parents will buy stuff for their kids anyway. It only really starts to get a little out of hand when their kids demand for items that cost well over a grand every few months or so.
