1.4 and 1.8 only half stop difference

but that does make a different to me when i use it to shoot astrophoto at wide open and super long shutter speed

if can get the 1.4 cheap i also want :D

do you always shoot astrophoto with a 50mm lens at wide open and super long shutter speed?
what other kinds of shots do you take that justify the need for half a stop less?

Yes, i am using 50/1.8 at wide open...but if got 1.4 even better....when the shutter speed is super long, a few second different does matter to me

cos slight vibration or wind will make that shot useless already

It's a bit closer to 2/3 stops.

Advantages of 1.4 (besides the speed):
- The 1.8 has a 5 blade diaphragm while the 1.4 has 8 blades, providing more circular bokeh spots.

Adv of 1.8
- lighter, though the 1.4 not really considered heavy.
- almost 'disposable'. The one lens you can drop without heartpain.

$600+ for a 1.4 lens is cheap; it just seems expensive bcoz the 1.8 is so dirt cheap. The nearest usable low-light lenses are 24/1.4L, 35/1.4L and 85/1.2L You pay serious $$$ for these.

BTW, don't play play. Any increase in lens speed means increase in overall brightness of the viewfinder and (potentially) faster AF for ALL shots, even the stopped down ones. i personally feel the 1.4 is a good deal.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the L versions give very good optical performance esp wide open. For the 1.4 version, it has very little optical performance over the 1.8 version

Moreover the USM is not the ring USM - hence I do feel it is a little pricey relatively although some people do want the better build quality, the f1.4 and the USM

so has anyone bargained for a good buy of the 50 1.8?

The thread died? Anyway, 2 weeks ago i got an equote from MS color, 128, with GST.. But then stock should have came in last week.. Try putting your name down with them ar.. They'll call i think.. Though they haven't called me.. :(

and when i went to CP, they qutoed me 150.. :(

Hi all. I just got a 2nd hand 50mm f1.8 and just to add to the discussion, I think it's a good lens in terms of sharpness and overall image quality even at f1.8 after trying it out. AF performance is fast which I believe is the direct result to the speed of the lens.

IMO, the plasticy feel is acceptable for the price - there is still a decent sense of quality. In fact, because of this, the lens is extremely light and small.

My only "problem" with the lens is that it's on the noisy side. But I won't pay about $500 for the slient USM motor - would rather get some other prime to compliment this cheap and good lens.

Hi All Clubsnappers,

Although I don't own any Canon camera(s) or lenses, but I do noticed that most of this Canon pro lenses series comes with a booming price-tag. Like EF50mm f/1.4 USM - S$600+ compare to Nikkor AF50mm f/1.4 D - S$400+ & so on...
Anyway, this are just what i realised & no offend to everyone out there(including the pros).

Interesting...can u name me somemore other than the 50/1.4?

btw, canon one has USM

just checked with CP this morning. 50 f1.8 is still out of stock. if it comes, it'd cost S$150 w/gst.

50 f1.4 will cost S$650 w/gst. stocks avaliable.
but the quote is much more than it was in oct.

CP quotes always vary from sales person to sales person. I got quoted 3 different prices for my EF 100-400 at CP Marina and CP P Plaza. Finally bought it yesterday when I got quoted for 3rd time and for lowest amount. Quotes were given over a 3 week period!

Maybe you can ask James from P Plaza for the quote. He was the one who finally sold me my lens.

good for u. well, i have tried i-quote thru cp's website. not sure it is a wise way to get the quote. but it certainly takes a long time (last time, it took more than 2 or 3 weeks) to hear the reply.

i have also tried to call P plaza and M square. but no luck..the quotes are still kind of high....

Hmmm.... I've used CP's e-qoute alot of times. They normally only take two days to reply. Of all my qoutes, I have not tried having to wait for more than 5 days. Maybe their system was down when you tried?

Anyway its free, just ask for a qoute. :D There's nothing to lose, its not like you are forced to buy the item or something. At least with that you know the price to work with.

I do find that it is true what was commented: that price varies with different salesperson.

Cheerz!

...so is the MO still on?.... :dunno:

hmmm..that is interesting...

but this time, i have waited for more than 4 days...no reply yet...

anyway, very keen to buy EF 50 f1.8

Hehehe..... You ask them give you a qoute for something hard to find ijjit? I just recieved my qoute for bags. Last week I asked for a qoute for the 50mm 1.8, also 2 days.

Maybe your name blacklisted :D

Qoute again lah, free one what! heheheeeeeeee

hohoho....

i'd just keep waiting..

Eh wait. But why you waiting for qoute? You already know the price range. Just go down and bargain lah! Don't need any qoute.

Anyway I'm going to CP in half an hour to buy bag. Will check if they have the 50mm 1.8, maybe let you know got stock or not later.
