They wrote a formal complain to Canon Marketing and now they(Canon people) are looking into the matter. Well I hope they just sit on it. And you're damn right about the pricing here. Very dodgy.

bro, unity is strength!!

M.O conducted by CS members are a good alternative to buying direct from these shops as most of these items are pretty rare on the local market. anyway, the pricing offered by the M.O are usually more attractive.

there're direct/parallel imports from various VCD shops which sold music CDs at such low price as compared to music retail stores and they can't do much about it anyway. it is all about survival. these shops, instead of blaming it on the resourcefulness of human beings, should examine themselves and their sale practices.

no worries...

Are we going OT on this thread?

It works both ways... if consumers unite Canon Sg also LL about pricing of their products... if they restrict support till it becomes uneconomical, other brands will become much more attractive in the end.

Could you elaborate on this? Like where you heard this from and how did a bunch of local retailers get together and acted collectively on this? Most shops here are at each other's throats.
I heard about this from a local shop(very reputable one too, but I shall not mention the name here). You're right about the shops here are on each other's throat but prices of cameras in Singapore is really dodgy.

Anyway, not to OT too much, I hope you guys get really good pricing for the 5D MO. Cheers!

PS: I'm having a hard time justifying the price of the 5D.

these amount is sing$ or US ?

BH Photo selling for $3300 + $65 shipping to Singapore.

Another place eCost selling for about $3150 with shipping within US....

Wonder how much is this cam selling in Japan and Hong Kong...

saw there are ppl selling 5D here at $6100 ..

Not a Canon user but did a calculation for it. Body + grip = $6.5 SGD. Worth it or not, you decide. ;) (Convertion rate at 1.7 and 5% GST)

It could be Canon sg that is setting the price here. Shop generally will sell the items that they get from the principle at a certain profit margin.

The shops are seriously ill-advised if they think that would stop MO-ing or parallel importing :P Perhaps its just a rumour to "scare" those who don't know the correct situation.

I heard from a local dealer(shall not mention name) that some our local shops are filling a complaint regarding this mass-order thingy. Dont know how true this is but anyway, who doesnt want good price right?

Uppez for the good price!

I think they should focus on after sale service and other industry sector.....globalisation had forced them out in the consumer products division and I feel probably a restructure for canon in S.E.A region is imminent.

With internet where info flows freely, the pricing of consumer products is highly competitive. As a result in such a small country, small dealers cannot survive anymore. Japan can get 5D below SGD 5K if MO, single purchase is SGD5050 with cash. However, I still feel this is crazy price as there is no FF from competitors!!! I hope Sony/Samsung come out with FF and it will force Canon to reduce te price drastically

Wow! that is really attractive price at Jap.

I would love to know where you got the pricing from.

Oh I see, then he better double check his exchange rates again. During the last few months, I have seen the forex go from 63 to 67 depending on the situation. I rather peg it at the low point to be realistic.

Coincidentally, I spoke to one of the shops today before seeing this thread (which I can't name, obviously). It was the first time I ever saw an EOS 5D... and I had a chat with the storeowner... who also commented that he had heard it was cheaper to buy it in Japan.

He said that dealer mark-ups are quite standard... and they said that frankly, it was Canon which was pricing it way too high. They showed me an on-the-spot calculation and based on what its typically retailing for ... even after all other costs and taxes... Canon Singapore was pricing it at least $500 too high.

So Japan will be the cheapest among all countries 2 get 5D ?
