SINGAPORE: The Ministry of National Development (MND) has decided to proceed with a dormitory development at the former school site at Serangoon Gardens for manufacturing and services workers.

The capacity will be capped at 600 for a start.

MND will consider increasing to a maximum of 1,000 in future if there's a need and after further consultations.

It adds that various measures to address residents' concerns will be implemented.

These include a new access road into Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 that will be constructed to serve the dormitory.

Meanwhile, the entrance at Burghley Drive will be closed except for emergency fire engine.

The dormitory will start operation within a year with self contained facilities like provision shops.

The dormitory operator will be required to implement a set of security measures and house rules such as no illegal activities.

They will also be increasing the buffer space between residents and the dormitory with additional fencing and planters to screen the site. - CNA/vm

I don't know, it just sounds like caging them up and releasing them when required to me.

Good. That estate can now learn to live with other people. That is not their grandfather's land.

Disgusting!

When you treat other nicely, they will become an integral/contributing/valuable part of the society you live in. I you treat them like animals, they will behave like animals. A self fulfilling prophecy waiting to happen.

WTF is this? Are they running a zoo? Why is there a need for this? If you're going to integrate them, integrate them; don't do a half-ass job about it.

As always, (some) logic and rationality prevails in the end ;)

Dumb decision.

why the members here getting so "nanny" nowaday??

doubt anybody would dare to turn the singapore turf club in bukit timah into a dormitory.. :bsmilie:

as much as i had warned weeks ago. the writings were on the wall. if you read what m.b.t. was saying.

turt club at bukit timah? you are way behind time. it is at current location at kranji for some ten year.

didn't follow the news as they only mentioned "considering".. suddenly bingo..

many stunning news this week..

I rather they just scrap the idea and build the dorm in some area where there are no housing esp private housing.

Reasons?

Presently the way the dorm is run.. seperate road from the rest of the estate, self containing facilities, security barriers and all as the news said to "keep the workers in".
I mean please.... they might be foreign but they sure are not criminals. The way the dorm is run, it is more like a prison.

And the present residents are even more angry and resentful now that the decision is passed despite their protests and they are going to show their anger and resentment towards these workers whether or not these workers really commit any offenses.

I think since Singaporeans really cannot accept foreign workers then let's not force it down their throat and spare foreign workers the shame of being labeled criminals when they just want to work and earn money for their families back home.

ya, i meant the vacant old turf club.. it will never go thru cos many big boys staying there

with a start of 600 being housed, & a new road being build. i wonder if they have a contingency plan for an alternative route out if a major fire broke out. 600 people running out towards a tiny side gate will likely cause a stampede, neither do i wish to read that workers got burnt to death stuck on fences. is there a large enough holding area for them when they made their way out in such event?

oh my...i fear for those rich daughters going back home late after clubbing or drinking...

Cinderella never walks back home, there's always a sober friend or bf, a cab or own self drive car home. :bsmilie:

its reported that the dorm is housing factory & service staff, not an all male dorm for construction industry.

Yeah but as one resident said... doesn't matter if it is factory or service staff... it is still FOREIGN WORKERS and security is an issue. End of the day sadly to many Singaporeans FOREIGN WORKERS EQUATES TO RAPISTS, MOLESTERS, CRIMINALS..... sigh... reminds me of how some RACIST WHITES in some countries regard all ASIANS, SINGAPOREANS included as DRUG DEALERS, DRUG PUSHERS, DRUG ADDICTS....
