[Mio Cade] - Philippines (NGO project)

Love your all your series! Your pics certainly tells more than a thousand words...everyone of them! Those are all award-winning series.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Thank you for dropping by....I hope these children got the world attention and could receive our love.

Your pics leave me at a loss for words. This is so different from all the run of the mill travel pics like vendors along the beaches or seascapes during dusk kind of shots. I really wanna use the term "refreshing" change here. However, I guess the word "refreshing" should not be a word used in context here.

Thank you for letting the world or users of CS to know that there is a different side to travelling beyond those tourist infested hotspots around the world.

A job well done!

Smoky Mountain, Tondo - Charcoal Child
At the charcoal factory, the environment is hazardous. Fire burning and black smoke polluting the air.
The air is toxic. I wonder how much carbon monoxide this boy breathed in and how much heat his young tender body has to withstand.
He has no protection and even his shirt was stripped off.
The small amount of water was not to be used to cool him off but rather to regulate the temperature of the burning cool.
He saw me approaching him and he just lifted up his head and gave me a smile. I smiled back at him as he continued to work on the burning charcoal.

The trip is tomorrow. As usual I never plan for my trip. But I trust God for protection and direction. Thank you so much for your prayer :)

The pictures have already changed a nation. I could not say aloud but the photos were used in a presidential campaign by a candidate. He is now the new president ;) And my condition to him then was to be the people president.

Smoky Mountain, Tondo - Leading the way

I just came back from Manila after visiting our project site. It took me a while to post this photo of toddlers leading us to the project site, coz my sponsored grandson in Makassar, Indonesia just passed away this morning at 6am from diarrhea. I felt helpless and sad now. The words of God are my only comfort.

We are building a new church / community hall/ pre-school for the residents of Smoky Mountain.

We raised some USD7000 for the project. We will complete the project by August before typhoon lands in September.

This trip we have friends from Singapore and Indonesia to help me in estimating the additional cost to complete the project.

It was great to have an architect to tag along. His quantity surveying skill was much needed.

We also have our Philippines friends in helping out. Their knowledge of Tondo is important.

For 2 days, I walked in the thick smoke of Ulingan (charcoal factory) documenting the latest status of Ulingan. We also capturing the life of some of the scavengers who worked the garbage dump.

Smoky Mountain, Tondo - Scavenger Boys
Child Scavengers of Smoky Mountain.

They dig and dig in search of items that can be recycled. But underneath these so called treasures (garbage) there may be snakes, scorpions, centipedes and other poisonous reptiles that may sting and bite. The children almost have no protection except a pair of donated boots.
And how much do these children earn ?
I was told only 50 pesos (less than $1) per day.

Ulingan, Tondo - World without colour
The smoke emerged from the burning charcoal is so thick that you could hardly see colour of the object around you.

I call Ulingan a place where colour does not exist.

Ulingan, Tondo - Our Home, the charcoal factory
You would wonder who would stay in this type of hazardous environment. The think smoke full of carbon monoxide could choke you to death and the heat could scourge your skin till it turns reddish.

The tough children of Ulingan or sometimes we call them the charcoal kids not only call this place a home, it is their playground too.
