Minolta teleconverters

Hi guys,

found out that the Minolta 2x APO teleconverter is specifically designed for the Minolta G lens like the 200 f2.8 or the 300 f2.8... so if I use the teleconverter, will it spoil the teleconverter or the lens? :dunno:

Also, any recommendations for good teleconverters and the price range? I looked at the Sigma 2x EX APO teleconverter as well but not sure of the quality...

Why dun bring your cam down to the Minolta showroom at Funan and ask and try? Or to either Cathay or Alan to try?

Hi everyone n bja in particular,

Just joined the comm n truly enjoyed the Minolta exchanges. Also happened to have one of those finicky but top quality Minolta APO TCs - good point to check fit when u can find one available.

But pls be careful, though it will be quite obviously impossible to fit the APO TC to the zoom - its quite easy to scratch the metal lens holder rim on the TC should u try. Believe the Sigma APO TCs are also based on the same design so if u want to extend your 80-200 G, u will have to 'settle' for one of the 'normal' non-APO designed ones from Kenko, Tamron etc.

You may want to check if the Sigma 2.8 EX zoom can be extended with their APO TC - it was not possible with the previous 2.8 APO version. May b the best APO zoom alternative...

huh? Are you folks implying that the Minolta TC can't be used on all Minolta AF lens, but only the G lens? If so, how about the Minolta 80-200 F2.8 APO lens?

Anyway, I don't own any TC, G lens nor 80-200 F2.8 APO lens.

I think the Minolta TC is specially designed to fit the Minolta prime f2.8 G lens from 200mm and above.....

That was why I wanted to make sure if I can use it coz I don't have G lens as well.... like what njin suggested, I might just need to settle for third party TCs like Kenko or Tamron...

No, the Minolta tele converters can't be used for any Minolta zooms, not even the 80-200. They are matched to the long G primes only. And the 135 STF, by the way, but that's not a very tempting combination.

The Kenko PRO teleconverters are very often recommended in this case. I own the 1.4x TC and can testify that it is indeed top-notch.

By the way, the new 70-200 SSM can be used with the new 1.4x and 2x Minolta tele converters, but not with the earlier two Minolta TC versions I and II (because of the earlier TC's having only five contacts in the mount). The Kenko PRO 1.4x converter will most likely work with the SSM lenses too, as it doesn't seem to convert any communication between the lens and camera.

Woah!! So pro!! I guessed that he was Scandinavian also given his name....... is he a pro? He shoots using 3 different cameras??? Dynax 9, 9xi and 9000? And looks like he uses Minolta lens exclusively......

Just to say I agree, I have a 80-200 apo g and got a minolta 2x apo mk2 and had to send it back as it didn't fit (should have done a bit more home work I guess!) but have just got a kenko pro 300 2x seems v good but have not had the chance to use it too much yet (paid £127 for it new)

i dug this old thread when i was trying to find out more about teleconverter... i'm using a dynax 5.. if i put a 1.4x or 2x teleconverter... and it adds 1 or 2 fstop more... would my camera have problem doing autofocusing? i heard that it would be a problem for AF when the minimum f goes beyond 5.6??

happen to have a 2x teleconverter (teleplus).
and you're right!
when i used in on my dynax 5 & minolta 75-300mm zoom, AF basically don't work.

you know, it tried to do AF, but not accurate at all.

read from the manual, when f/stop is more than 5.6 (after coupled with teleconverters), AF basically don't work.

i guess for those of us who can't afford a f/2.8 G lens, we got to live with MF with TC.

I forgot to mentioned, I have bought Teleplus MC7 2x ($150 or $170 cannot remember liao). It works with all the lens that I have like 50/f1.4, 24-85/f3.5-f4.5, 80-200/f2.8. Photos turn out reasonable sharp and colour without any losses. Interestingly, the 50/f1.4 become a 100/f3.5 instead of 100/f2.8.

shouldn't this be the case if they would be 2 f-stop down?
any recommendation where to get the MC7 at that price you bought it for?
