You are right. Experience and technique are paramount. However, without the necessary hardware, it'll make a difficult job (shooting birds) even more difficult. With hardware but neither technique nor experience, its just like Ferrari without Michael Shumacher- difficult to win F1 all the time. ;)

haa.. if 'old bird' says its the technique and not the gear, I lent my 50 for him to shoot bird. it goes hand-in-hand lah.

alamak, they would be refering to zoom lens liao. ;p
