Thanks...

I just chat with someone in the retail business. Was told the Sigma flash can last only one year, not very durable. Not sure what to go for now!!!

Try Metz. Very reputable brand in flashes. Or get the Oly flash if they have one.

erhm ... so are you agreeing that the Sigma has a short life or are you saying it depends on how well you look after your equipment?

for flashes , there will be a timeline. the more you use it, the quicker it will die. There is no such thing Sigma does not last long. If you only use it once a month, i don't think it will die after 1 year.

refer to the spec, it will tell you the number of flashes u can make before the bulb will blown.

the salesman who told u sigma flash will last one year is nothing but a liar.

Like that my program flash will die quite soon lar! I took 17 rolls over 2 weeks with flash on all the time!!!

is it possible to change the bulb when it's burnt out or must buy new flash?

*curious*

Oh it's the small one ar? I saw a huge MecaBlitz with a side bracket, the type that pros use at Ruby Photo. Thought it cost only $240! :D

what do the following functions do/mean?

Auto zoom

Hi-speed sync

AF auxiliary light

auto zoom means the flash zooms automatically to suit your focal length, hence light coverage angle changes, plus power changes.

Hi speed sync is for freezing action. else usu flashes give max speed of 1/125 only I think, not sure.

AF aux light is when the light isn't enuff for camera to judge AF properly. for dynax 5 you'll notice the inbuilt flash going off rapidly to help it gauge AF, with an external flash, some flashes help to do it with IR.

Correct me if I"m wrong!

hmm ... the Suntax 928 doesn't have hi-speed sync, doesn't have auto zoom, cannot swivel

does this make it a 'lousy' flash => buy already then later cough up more cash to buy a better flash?

1: autozoom means you flash will also zoom when you change a focus length. For example if you are taking a picture of friends, you turn your focusing ring(onthe lens)to 28 MM so that your friends will all fit into the frame. You flash will change to 28mm so that it will cover the angle.

next, if you shooting a bird for example, you change your focusing distance to 80mm, you flash will also change to 80 mm, which will not cover un-necessary angle but only the bird. when the angle is bigger, the flash is weaker(at 28 mm), when the angle is shorter(at 80mm), the flash will be stronger.

2: Hi-speed sync means your flash will sync at all speed(up to 1/8000 for Dynax 7, 1/12000 for dynax 9). for typical old flash, it will only sync at 1/90 or lower, if you sync any speed faster than that, there will be a dark/black shadow on the corner. With HSS, you can use it like a fill flash, to freeze fast action, or to remove unwanted shadow.

3: AF auxiliary light : All cameras focus very badly in dim light(at night for example), auxiliary light is a red light that will beam at the subject to help the camera to focus.

That's about all.

Regard the Suntax 928, it is kinda lousy if you ask me. How much was it? When not get Sigma one if you budget is tight? Cannot swivel is ok, cannot zoom also ok(u push the button yourself lor), but no HSS is not ok, at least for me.

It depands wat you want lor. go ahead and buy and learn the basic of flash photography if you want. Then later upgrade to a better one if you find it necessary.

anyone owns this flash or the Vivitar 736 AF Flash?

the 729 AF costs $65, info can be found at:
http://www.vivitarasia.com/Products/Flash_Unit/729AF_Flash.htm

info on the 736 can be found here:
http://www.vivitarasia.com/Products/Flash_Unit/736AF_Flash.htm

the 729's bounce angle is "0 - 90 degrees" ... erhm ... does that mean it cannot bounce at 45 degrees?

729 doesn't have Auxiliary AF Illuminator?

thank you thank you!

thank you thank you!

0 - 90 also means " 0 to 90". which means u can tilt at 0,45,75,90 for example.

from the site u given, it was clearly stated there is illumination.
