Did anyone tried using oly TCON-17 (55mm thread ) on front of this lens
or the Sigma 70-300 SM II ? I beleive the light fall should be minimum,
but most likely have to MF as this front mount TC add a lot more
strain on AF motor.

can confirm 1 thing... SURE VIGNET!

to test if physical limitation or design crippling u try to focus at a lamp? if still cannot think it's a deliberate design...

OT a little, which is the recommended TC to buy and "convert" (KRAK) into extension tube huh?

any cheap 2X TC on the 2nd hand market. make sure there's contact to control the aperture since minolta AF lenses has no aperture ring.

I found this post of TCON-17 user
I've done some photography for a theatre company (pics on my website), when doing the shoot I tried with the flash (as per the pro that was also on the shoot) but really did not like the results of the test images, so I switched to using the 50mm (and the TCON17) and dropping the flash altogether. I was much happier with the results (as were the theatre company - 3 jobs followed).

I tend to shout quite a bit about using the TCON17, most SLR users dismiss this piece of kit and instead use rear fitting teleconverters, the advantages of the TCON17 is that it's front mounting (don't have to remove lens), due to it's large front element there is no light lost (my 50mm f/1.8 becomes an 85mm f/1.8), it's inexpensive and it's relatively lightweight. It has a 55mm thread (plastic, so I use an old filter that lost it's glass as a permanent fixture) and even when using it on my 70-210 (62mm thread, step-down ring used) there is no vignetting (although it is unusable with the Tamron 28-200). As the 50mm f/1.8 is so inexpensive and useful for low light, I do recommend the TCON17 as a money saving way to get that extra reach without hurting the pocket.

Cheers :)

I just stumbled on this thread, though i am not a Minolta user, but recently thinking of getting a teleconverter ... after reading, so let's say i have a 100-300mm lense (f4.5-6.7), it is not possible tat i use a 2x teleconverter with the lense? as it reduces 2 f-stops. So i can only use a 1.4x tat reduces 1 f-stop?

U can use the lens in bright daylight. Should still focus.

The Minolta TCs dun work with the zooms... unless your zoom does not have the rear element protruding out into the camera lens mount cavity. That's why the TCs work only with primes... it's left to the 3rd party TCs to fill this gap since quality suffers... but if u mount a tripod and manual focus with the M/L screen, it should work pretty well. Only pity is my 100-400 lens does not mount well on my tripod as it lacks a tripod collar... are there clamp-on collars?

Manfrotto manufactures long lens supports:
