does the Metz 58 powers off (when attached to the camera) when the camera is switched off ?
It does not. The power on the Metz 58 is controlled by flipping a hard switch. Even when the camera is powered off, the Metz does not go into 'idle' mode.
I rented the flash and played with it for a day @ SIN yesterday and was very impressed with it. My feel was that it's TTL was better and it was able to produce the tone of colours I like when both the flash are operating in 'super fp mode' (directly pointing front) for shooting subjects on the stage.
Generally, I liked the way this flash is built more than the Fl-50r. I do not know if it applies to all or just my piece of fl-50r, because it takes some skill to depress the button for the head swivel lock. Whereas, the Metz-58 only locks it's head when the flash head is in 'super fp mode' (directly pointing front). It allows me to switch between shooting landscape and portrait mode by turning the flash head more quickly.
Just my 2 cents on half a day's usage of the flash. If time/setting allows, I will post a couple of pictures for comparison based on the same setup/setting.
