does the Metz 58 powers off (when attached to the camera) when the camera is switched off ?

It does not. The power on the Metz 58 is controlled by flipping a hard switch. Even when the camera is powered off, the Metz does not go into 'idle' mode.

I rented the flash and played with it for a day @ SIN yesterday and was very impressed with it. My feel was that it's TTL was better and it was able to produce the tone of colours I like when both the flash are operating in 'super fp mode' (directly pointing front) for shooting subjects on the stage.

Generally, I liked the way this flash is built more than the Fl-50r. I do not know if it applies to all or just my piece of fl-50r, because it takes some skill to depress the button for the head swivel lock. Whereas, the Metz-58 only locks it's head when the flash head is in 'super fp mode' (directly pointing front). It allows me to switch between shooting landscape and portrait mode by turning the flash head more quickly.

Just my 2 cents on half a day's usage of the flash. If time/setting allows, I will post a couple of pictures for comparison based on the same setup/setting.

I heard from a sales person saying that we can use METZ 58.... for canon or nikon to be use on olympus using some adapter/converter, just wondering will it works the same for dedicated to Olympus/Panasonic? eg. Remote, TTL?

There are AF-1 specifics of Oly/Panny, so no point in having an adapter, if such a thing even exists!

after many months of searching and waiting, i need to use this flash for my brother wedding for next yr Jan. I BOUGHT IT at K13! $680 nett. hahahaha new toy to play with liao. For matter of fact i didn't go for the tristatecamera.com this time for the flash. Because the current exchange rate (US $1 = Spore $1.53) which cost me $630~40 making only 40 dollars diff + 3wks to 1 month longest wait for delivery + you need to scan your credit cards and IC plus email to them for their verification of the original card user + may not have warranty since it is internet shopping. with the points i mention above is worth that $40 in exchange of convenience. my collection considered completed... ... any outing again i will try to attend and learn from you all thanks.... .... sorry for too lengthy

Congratulations to your new acquisition! Seems like Christmas came slightly earlier for you this year :bsmilie:

I agree, the killing point of buying from internet is always the hassle and the wait, and what seemed to be the vantage point as from the 'weakened' exchange rate is no longer a plus point. Kudos to your decision.

Basically,E-510 cannot use with Metz 58AF,FL-50R and Fl-36R remotly but only slave flash,it's when the built in flash triggers the external flash

Does this flash gun got the Super FP mode like the FL-56R

yes,but i can't remember what's the name but it does have for sure

Dear all, while there are loads of interest and excitement over Metz flashes, which has been making very good flash units since I can remember, but take note of the fact that there are no local distributor and service centres. So in the case of receiving a lemon (which happens these days), make sure you think about that before making a purchase. Check with the online retailer or shop (if you are buying from overseas) about covering these things. OK? Happy shopping and let's hear more about your good experience with the Metz flashes.

Super FP mode is HSS under Metz. Yes it is availiable.
